A splendid programme that finds Sir John celebrating London courtesy of Edward Elgar. The two overtures are beautifully done with ample shade to counterbalance the swagger. And it’s a real treat to hear all five of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, especially when played as sensitively as here. The rarely encountered Second and Fifth marches are superbly conducted; the Philharmonia are on top form.
