The February issue Gramophone Player opens with an excerpt from our Recording of the Month: Rachmaninov's Vespers, All-Night Vigil, by the Latvian Radio Choir with conductor Sigvards Kļava (Ondine).
Two very fine cellists are represented: Christian Poltéra plays Barber's Cello Concerto (BIS) whilst Alisa Weilerstein's new recording of Elgar's Cello Concerto is coupled with Elliott Carter's concerto (Decca). Lovers of Brahms's music are well catered for with complete tracks from Jonathan Plowright's new recording of the Third Sonata (BIS) and Klaus Tennstedt leading the LPO in the First and Third Symphonies from 1994 (LPO). Add to that Lars Vogt and Christian Tetzlaff playing Mozart's violin sonatas (Ondine), Michael Tilson Thomas leading the San Francisco Symphony in 20th-century American classics (SFS Media), Elizabeth Watts singing Strauss songs with Roger Vignoles accompanying (Hyperion), and Bernarda Fink's recital of Spanish song (Harmonia Mundi).
