The May issue Gramophone Player opens with an excerpt from our Recording of the Month: Haydn's Piano Concertos Nos 3, 4 and 11 performed by Marc-André Hamelin with Les Violons du Roy, conducted by Bernard Labadie (Hyperion)

The line-up of recordings on this month's Player continues with Steven Isserlis taking the solo role in Bloch's Schelomo (BIS), followed by three great new recordings of symphonies: Edward Gardner leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a remarkable recording of Lutosławski's First Symphony, Mendelssohn's Second Symphony recorded by Jan Willem de Vriend and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra (Challenge), and Sir Mark Elder with the Hallé playing Vaughan Williams's Fifth (Hallé). And there is much more besides: trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth playing Puccini (EMI Classics), pianist Maria João Pires in Schubert (DG), Jonas Kaufmann singing Wagner (Decca), Julia Lezhneva in Handel (Decca), and the second excellent recording of Bach's St John Passion this year (following the March Recording of the Month by the Dunedin Consort with John Butt) by Stephen Layton with Polyphony and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Hyperion).
