This summer, percussionist Joby Burgess will be touring a new solo recital programme called 'Pioneers of Percussion', which features music by Takemitsu, Xenakis, Feldman and Pärt. In the gallery above, Burgess reveals a selection of the highly unusual graphic scores that he needs to contend with in this pioneering repertoire. He has to play an extraordinarly wide range of percussion instruments as part of the programme, including an aluminium harp, a typewriter, a giant steel sheet, loop pedals, an Angolan shepherding instrument and electronics. The full recital programme is as follows:

Toru Takemitsu Seasons, Iannis Xanakis Psappha, Morton Feldman King of Denmark, Nicole Lizée The Filthy Fifteen, Linda Buckley Ekstasis, Rebecca Dale Night Wonders, Joby Burgess/Matthew Fairclough Carbon Copy, Arvo Pärt Fratres.

The 'Pioneers of Percussion' tour will be appearing at Capstone Theatre Liverpool on March 15, Swaledale Festival on June 6, Deal Festival on July 3 and Ryedale Festival on July 25. For more information, visit: jobyburgess.com
