Automated "naughty word" filtering

Please could someone from the moderation team explain what's happening, as the automated filtering seems to produce some very odd results, such as removing letters from the middle of perfectly acceptable words
Note to moderators - this is a genuine and sincere enquiry, since the filtering seems to be causing real and unexpected problems on a current thread, making it rather pointless to continue.

We're working on it.
Your earlier thread alerted us to some filtering inconsistencies, which we are endeavouring to resolve. Extended discussion of the matter will merely delay such resolution.
