being retained for moderation
On Saturday, about mid-morning, I was taking part in forum exchanges here when suddenly my attempts to post were marked "retained for moderation" while others' contributions continued to appear and the "debates" proceeded without me.
I am at a loss to understand why this happened - I thought my contributions were fairly innocuous - but who knows what might have offended someone. They have not appeared since, but then there would be little point as they would be out of sequence with the issues under discussion.
My question is, what triggers this process? Does someone press "flag as offensive" thus holding up posts until moderators start work (presumably on Monday morning)? As Martin had responded to a request to ban someone with the suggestion that flagging as offensive was a possible option for posters, did someone who finds my "liberal" sentiments offensive, use this process to censor my posts? Is this how it works?
I would like to know the process at work here.
Vic.

Right. Thanks for the explanation Martin.
The problem of course is that it puts the power of effective censorship into anyone's hands. However, it could be a price worth paying given the offensive rubbish we have been subjected to lately from a certain quarter.
Now I can guess what happened in my case. There will be no retaliation though - my oh-so-offensive "liberal" sentiments preclude its use on my part. The irony is that I have been the one accused of wanting to stifle opinion! It seems the bluff and bluster inhabits a thinner skin than I thought. Interesting.

I don't think anyone could accuse you of stifling opinion.
Your posts [though I don't always agree with your views] are a model of restraint and intelligence. Please don't be discouraged from putting your views on the site. I think that what you have to say enriches the Gramophone site experience.

Hi Vic,
I flagged up as offensive - and plain stupid - a number of posts emanating from you know who over the weekend, and I'm sorry if it turns out that some of your posts got caught in the crossfire. But I make no apologies for trying to strike off the dreaded doc.

No apology necessary Simon. I can't think of a nobler cause to be sacrificed in crossfire for.
And thanks for kind comments guys.

Just had a post reply to 'Holy Minimalist' thread queued for mods..... can't imagine any offence.
It got pulled immediately so can't be due to any offence flag!
Seems arbitrary!
Pause for thought.

My post wot's been sent to 'The Mods' was copied and pasted because the page crashed and I had to back-track to find my comment. And in order not to lose it I copied and pasted and that post was sent to mods....... I have since put a comment in which was accepted. All subsequent pasted attempts have been sent off to Mod-Land.
So, Vic, I know you like to prep your comments in a word processing doc then pasting .... I think that's the issue here. The system is checking pasted comments as if it's spam or such-like.
Pause for thought.

I'm not really a full-time mod here, and anyway I am supposedly on leave at the moment, but your problem in that thread is now sorted, Atonal. Looks like a piece of rogue HTML code in your posts was making the spam filters see your posts as a non-specific processed meat product, and that was causing them to be canned.

I can hear a Monty Python song coming on.

It is not sorted as it happens on everything I post.

Hello Vic,
Yes, flagging up does remove the post while we decide whether or not to publish it. Occasionally, however, a post might be removed not so much because of the content itself, but because it makes reference to another post which was removed due to content, and so makes no sense on its own. I'm not saying that is what has happened here, but it could be one of the reasons.
