If a thread is deleted, are there other reasons than that a particular post has contravened the forum rules? I have seen in the past a message in the place of text saying it was deleted because it had breached the rules. While not criticising moderators' decisions, it seems a little harsh on those trying to keep to the point of the tread.
Apologies if asking the question itself breaches the forum rules. Not sure about that one (?)

What have you been up to this time Vic. Your brand of agitprop not very popular these days.

A thread has been unpublished at the request of the Deputy Editor and in response to complaints about some of the content therein, pending a ruling by the Editor, who is not in the office today but will return tomorrow.
It's unpublished rather than deleted, and provided Martin is happy tomorrow it will be reinstated, either in its entirety or in an amended form.
I appreciate Martin might be slightly distracted by the little matter of editing the next edition of the magazine but is there any progress on the above? I thought the "crossover" thread had interesting developments, and I'm sure Parla is just itching defend his pop v. classical song distinction.
If a couple of posts' frustrated use of thinly disguised expletives was the problem, surely a note in their place to the affect that the rule about offensive comments had been breeched would be sufficient?
By the way, nice use of "unpublished rather than deleted" Andrew. A few more like that and you will be fielding offers from the Vatican Press Office!

I'm afraid I can't answer for the state of Martin's schedule. You'll have to take that up with him.
And the distinction between deleted and unpublished is an important one: if a post is deleted then, thanks to the bizarre content system with which we are saddled, it is gone for ever; if it is unpublished it may be retrieved and republished if so desired.

Instead of using expletives just substitute the words 'Paul Simon'.

Thanks for pointing out the distinction Andrew. Obviously a bit of misplaced humour on my part!

By the way, does anyone else notice a rather unpleasant farmyard smell occasionally? Best just to ignore it and hope the wind changes direction perhaps.

You are at that tender age Vic when you might have to look closer to home for little whiffs, the others didn't want to point it out to you, they are much too polite.

No. Definitely no change in wind direction yet.

Nor wind speed as far as I can tell. Still, even if it's tripe, it's probably organic tripe.

Hello,
Apologies for the delay - I was abroad. I looked at the unpublished thread, and as the most recent two pages seem to have generally moved away from the topic in hand and towards, at times, rather heated trading of insults between forum members, I think it might be best left unpublished.

Hello,
...at times, rather heated trading of insults between forum members, I think it might be best left unpublished.
Martin
A pity, but fair enough. A salutary reminder that overheated exasperation has prevented its cause being challenged with reasoned argument.
Stick to the music: Parla was right about that. His other position must now be left to stand too.

I think Martin's decision was wise enough.
Thanks Vic for converging to a basic view of mine. Maybe, we may converge on more in the near future, by sticking to the music. We'll see.

Parla,
We certainly "converge" on the need to keep the personal out of debate - hard though it be sometimes. My point above was that because some were unable to do so, discussion of a key issue, a fundamental difference on how music is appreciated and valued, has been lost.
When I wrote that your position must now be left to stand, I meant stand unchallenged because debate has been ended, not stand as accepted. But then, given its nature, it is sure to arise again from another source.
I sometimes feel your view of "convergence" is an acceptance of your point of view rather than an agreement to differ. Perhaps I mistake you.

Perhaps, Vic, perhaps.
If our deliberations take place in good faith, trust and in the best possible manner, we may converge easier and without the feeling of "gamesmanship" (Partsong has traced in me), which, however, might exist in most of us.

Perhaps, Vic, perhaps.
Perhaps what, Parla? Perhaps I mistake you? Or perhaps we might "converge"?
Just out of interest, what do you mean by "converge"? I know what I mean by it, and it isn't "agree to differ".
Vic.
