Healthy forum?
It can become tedious when a few people get a 'stranglehold' over a forum, and I use that term deliberately because they often develop territorial and/or cliquey habits which discourages wider discussion. You get to know in advance what contributor x will say, how they will say it, and why this will aggravate contributor y.
....My other thought about the way a few people can come to dominate forums is that simply not enough people seem willing or able to post topics. That leaves the field to a small group. ....
A spam item (quickly deleted) resurrected this thread this morning and led me to skim through it. It seems we are in a similar period of quiet or disinterest which prompted my first post last October and I wondered if John's comments quoted above point to a possible reason.
Have people been turned away by provocative cynicism, silenced by constant lengthy assumptions of superiority and expertise on anything and everything, put off by the inability to debate about the relationship of classical music to areas like belief, other genres, or the role of the BBC without such issues being taken as personal affront?
Over the years this forum has been the finest platform for the exchange of views, information and experience of classical music and has certainly contributed to my own knowledge and enjoyment of it. It is a pity to see so few contributions for quite a while now.
Perhaps it's the holiday period?
Vic.

Hi Vic! Just been taking a break meself, but still reading what's being posted. Traffic has been slow recently. It is a shame though that we seem to have lost some good regular contributors at the moment like Tagalie, Troyen, Atonal, JKH, Craig - hope you guys are still out there reading!
Regards all
Mark

Vic.
All of the above. I miss interchanges with most members - you two guys plus the people Mark lists plus the much-lamented Dubrob. I don't miss arm wrestling the 3 Stooges. Life's too short.
But just let me once again tip my hat to you Mark for the inspiration to investigate Renaissance music. I'm all Victoria these days (Tomas Luis, not Beckham), a new motherlode for me. Had some interesting exchanges, with various people in the business, on the 1583 and 1603 Requiems, the upshot of which is there's a surprising lack in-depth knowledge on the composer.
Hope you lads made it through the Olympic and Jubilee hysteria in one piece.

So, conditionality on the debate? Hm? That's what one may call a "healthy forum"? I suspect the "House rules" is the only conditionality prevailing in this forum. Anyway, life is too short to debate on such matters.
By the way, Tagalie, since you are full of Victoria this period, try the 10CD box of Archiv on T.L. Victoria's opus. If you manage to get through all of them, you'll pass the exams with colours. If you stop around the fifth disc, you'll be still a good and loyal convert. If you don't manage to reach even this point, I guess none is going to blame you.

Hi Tagalie! Good to see you're still with us in spirit (in more ways than one if you're getting into Victoria). Well done thou good and loyal convert!
Time I ordered some more Victoria myself, courtesy of an unexpected (not huge) windfall that's just arrived in the post this am! (Have you been mis-sold PPI?)
(Aside): Yes dear, I'm just going to go and fuel up...no I'm not going mad with that money, only ordering ONE cd today, promise...
Now I wonder if I should order some Philip Glass symphonies, or some Boulez, or some forgotten string quartets maybe...
Sorry had to dash. Old Professor Wrinkleman was on the phone and wanted my opinion on progress...

Hello Vic, Mark, Tagalie and all!
I think it's just the summer break. Certainly for me it has been. Some interesting topics nonetheless. I've been listening to a lot of Boulez and much renaissance polyphony over the summer (as well as Haydn string quartets). Hope to have more time to contribute from next week (threat or promise??).

That didn’t take long, did it?
A range of half-remembered quotes surface: there’s the line in that radio programme from the 50s – can’t recall the title – “ `e’s arrived and to prove it `e’s `ere.”
Then there’s Bunter’s, “I say you fellows, don’t walk away when a fellow’s talking to you!”
Nicholson putting an axe through the door in The Shining with, “Here’s Pa .......", sorry, "Here's Johnny!”
Henry’s “Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?”
Looks like nothing much, or not enough, has changed on here.
As for music, aside from Victoria, highlights for me have been Holmboe's Chamber Symphonies under Storgards, the ROH Macbeth under Pappano with a magnificent Keenlyside, Albeniz's Iberia (de Larrocha) and Yes's 'Fly from here' - a superb return to form.

It takes two to Tango, Tagalie. Don't blame only the one side.
Something could change in this forum. However, under the circumstances...maybe next year.
All the best in your listening quest,

Vic does bang on about these things. A healthy forum to Vic is lots of people who all agree with him. A sort of 'Sunday dinner around at Vic's', Vic has done all the cooking so he gets to choose who stays, who goes, what the topics are and he always gets the last word. Better agree with Vic if you want pudding.

Tee hee! Five name-checks in 63 words! I wonder if his bed-sit has a dartboard with my image as backdrop? Perhaps it's licence renewal time.

Hello Vic!
None of our inmates are allowed darts, or any other sharp objects, though we did allow Mr. Alice a bow and arrow set for his birthday, with plastic suckers on the arrows. We encourage him as part of his therapy to express his anger by shooting at pictures on his wall.

Go on then Tagalie - the inspiration is reciprocated! I've just ordered Victoria's 1605 Requiem from Amazon by Harry and The Sixteen. We'll hopefully exchange notes on that work in the near future...

Excellent choice, Mark. Victoria's "Requiem" with the Sixteen (on Coro) is a very solid performance and the only SACD recording with Victoria music. However, the latest very convincing recording of the "Officium Defunctorum", as this requiem of 1605 is known, has been made by the Collegium Vocale Gent under P. Herreweghe (on their label PHI). A brilliant performance and a very bright recording.
By the way, It seems that the 10box CD of Archiv with Victoria music has been deleted quite quickly. Apparently, there were few to accept the challenge.
Good listening,

If you hit the centre of the board is it called a 'Bulls Hit', that would be where I would place Vic's views.
