'Morning, Sirs. You see, I'm a far-dwelling distant region resident at the heart of Timbuktu, very near Missouri. But, you see, I happen to subscribe some regular daily newsletters from all over the world, incipient publications, such as NY Times, The Guardian, The Indy, Billboard, Downbeat, Cinemathèque Française, Cahiers du Cinema, BBC, RAI, RTBF, Life Magazine and TV5 Monde, just to name a few. For each and every of them, all I was ever asked is a single username or e-mail and a password to be subsequently confirmed. All. Just this. Plain this.

Well, with Gramophone I've been waging a cruel war/battle/dispute for more than one year, thanks to this very "clever" and "simplified" way of subscribing by Internet, in order for us, timbuktuans, to have the supreme honour of receiving your newsletters, messages, whatsoever. At my last attempt, today,I was graced with the recognition of my username, but as for the password that I've proposed,I was given instead something very simple as 2378eh23904326u7ewfnk48fmksdaifrg853t89, or something like this. And this very wonderfully-conceived password was to be used strictly ONCE, and in the lapse of 36 or 48 hours for it would destroy itself.Just like Mission Impossible.

Should I observe these severe rules, I would then be transferred to another site where I could, at last, record my definitive password. And it did happen! How glad I was, intimately. My heart skipped a beat. The page was open and I really could distinguish all the competent fields. When I finished doing this, though, I was stunned with the information that my username (or whatever) was of a non-recognizeable e-mail. How come? Hotmail and Gmail are used worldwide everyday, every hour, every minute, every second by everyone! No use.By Gramophone utterly expert authorities, they were non-recognizeable. And as for my password, the same that for the last 6 years I've been using to all those periodicals above,it was considered, by the local Tony Blair or Meg Thatcher of Gramophone, as Medium, on a scale of Weak-Medium-Strong, where, it seems, only the Strongs survive.Neo-Darwinism?

Well, gathering all my forces,I changed the e-mail to gmail.com (I was using hotmail.com until then) and distorted completely my worldwide password until it was accepted as Strong (or something like that). But to my utter dismay, there was still the reading that there was something wrong with my subscription. That I should try again and in case of a new failure that I should contact the Manager of the Site, which I hope to be doing now.

So, Sir, how could we solve all this? My admiration and respect for this almost centennial review couldn't be greater, for many and many years. But what in hell are you concocting with these absurd procedures? To keep away from a great, "popular", "lumpenproletariat" mass of readers? To restrict its reading public to the Esquires of the House of Lords? The Buckingham Palace? The Versailles partygoers? Well, I would say that you're indeed on the right track, if this is the target.

There must have a simpler way handy to be used at the so-called Gramophone Player! For us to finally meet the Winners of this year's Gramophone Awards! (oh, by the by, why in Deuce you hide and conceal at 7-keys the Recording of the Year 2008? It absolutely puzzles me! I've got the names of each and every winner, from 1977 (when I wonder the prize was created) to 2010, but this unattainable winner of 2008 is nowhere to be found, at any site of Gramophone! Another mystery for mr.Holmes.

Well, thanks anyway, not the least for your attention. It would surprise me very much if I ever get any hint to these riddles.

RE: registering at Gramophone/Gramophone PLayer

Hello, and I am sorry you have faced such difficulties with the site. It should be simple.

This is the place for registering: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/user/register

And this for subsequently logging in: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/user

Being told the email was not recognised when trying to register is almost certainly because you were at the login screen - we recognise all good addresses! That said, if this wasn't clear, that's useful feedback for us, so thanks for raising it.

Though finally, I can see you have registered and can help you log in, though for security reasons we should do this by email not on the web, so please contact me at gramophone.player@haymarket.com.

Best wishes,

Martin
