The most obvious suggestion is to read the user manual, so I will assume that you have already done that(!) These days, you often have to go to the manufacturer's website to download a proper user manual, as opposed to the quick startup guide enclosed with the appliance.

The next suggestion is to choose the on-screen menu marked "setup" or "tools", go to audio settings, and select the appropriate option for "audio output", i.e. something you will be able to feed to your venerable hi-fi, such as "2-channel analogue stereo".

If all else fails, try phoning the manufacturer's helpline, and keep a long book handy for reading while the voicemail repeatedly assures you that "your call is important to us".

Depending on which Samsung model it is, you may have to go into the Anynet+ menu and make sure 'Receiver' is set to on. This will reroute the sound to the optical digital output rather than to the TV's own speakers.
