Converting WMA audio files

I've recently changed from PC to mac use and I've been left with a sizeable number of wma files ripped from CDs over the past couple of years. I was in the process of transferring all these to i-Tunes when the PC/mac switchover happened. Ironically, when working with Windows, i-Tunes would automatically convert the files, but with the mac this doesn't happen. I've tested the "Plus" version of the Switch File Converter, but this doesn't seem to work either - the wma files seem to be "locked" into the mac. Any ideas, anyone..? Many thanks.

Do you have flip4mac installed before using the Switch Converter?

Thanks for your reply... Yes I did, but I'm not sure how to "apply" that when I load the files into Switch.

Is there anything non-standard about your ripped files (e.g. you have a strange sampling frequency or accidentally added copy protection?) Also have a look at this:

Thanks again for your input...

As far as I know, there is nothing unusual about the files - I simply loaded the Cds into the computer and saved them losslessly in Windows Media Player.

The version of Flip4mac I apparently require is only available on request from the company, so I have requested that, but I am still not clear how to make that work in conjunction with the files I am trying to convert.

flip4mac is just a plugin which Switch should use automatically (I would have thought it will tell you if it can't find.)

In the Window Media player on your original ripping PC if you go to options>rip there will be a copy protect check box if you are using WMA. Hopefully this should be unchecked (which is probably the default option).

What happens when you use Switch - do you get an error, no output at all or an empty mp3 file?

RE: Converting WMA audio files

I load the .wma files into Switch without any problem, select an output format which i-tunes should recognise (aiff, wav...), but when I click "convert", all the files end up with a big red cross alongside them and a message saying "The specified source format could not be read".

I don't have access to the PC where the files originally were at the moment, but I'm sure I wouldn't have ripped them with anything other than the default settings - other than the "lossless" bit...
