Several times recently the 'error' signal has been displayed for a CD from my collection. If the CD is turned in the tray the error display disappears and play goes ahead. I am wondering, though, if the phenomenon might not be due to an incipient fault in the player, a 10-year-old 'Marantz'.

RE: Error Display

I might be nothing, but then again...

Ten years is quite a long time for a mechanical device if it gets a lot of use, even good ones like yours.  When a similar thing happened to my sixteen year-old Linn Karik player eighteen months or so ago, it led me to investigate a replacement.  As it happened, the player never showed the fault again but it did lead me to discover digital streaming players, a fascinating new world to me at the time.  To cut a long story short, I took that route and am absolutely delighted with its convenience and better sound quality.   As DS players are not mechanical in operation wear is not an issue.  With my whole music collection (except vinyl of course) on one (well backed up) hard drive and accessed via an iPad, my CDs sit as a reference point and remain in their cases.  Cueing up an evening's listening, taking a concerto from one CD and a symphony by the same composer from another, all from your listening seat, is a bonus to the superior sound quality that lossless digital streaming, untouched by the mechanical workings of a CD player, allows.

Should the worse happen, this route might be worth considering.  CD players won't be around for much longer, is my guess.

Vic.

Thank you, Vic, for a very interesting reply, though I shall have to seek further advice as most computer technology is beyond me (I grew up with a wind-up gramophone).
