Lifting and Isolating Speaker Cable

Hi,

I've been slowly addressing isolation and resonance issues with my components and cables. The question that I have here is whether or not Ayre Myrtlewood blocks will be noticeably effective if placed under my High Diamond speaker cables? Are there other affordable solutions which might fair better than the Myrtlewood option? I'm in the states so shipping may or may not be a consideration.

Thanks!

You should have bought Low Diamond cables - I believe they're supposed to just rest on the floor.

I can hear the difference betweens cables ( if there is one) but I have never bought into lifting them off thr ground.

Tiger Al, yes that has been my thinking as well but I spoke to my local audio dealer and he said that there is a noticeable difference based on his experience. They carry the Myrtlewood blocks as an in stock item and charge about $5.00 a piece. My guess is that I may only need a total of 6 as my cable is rather large and ridged. I will have the opportunity to make the purchase, test them out and then decide to return them or decide to keep them. I would be more skeptical about these blocks or isolating the speaker cable if it weren't for the vast improvement that other isolation tweaks have delivered to my systems sonic quality. I'm willling and open into giving them a try but I'm wondering if other products might result in a more noticeable improvement.

You can use cig or cigarillo boxes to lift cables off the carpet. Much cheaper & just as effective it would seem.

Even though I have never actually noticed a difference...

OTOH, I would strongly urge you to consider separating power cables from signal cables -- OR have them cross at a right angle. There is a difference in this case...

It is fun to play around with this sort of thing, though, isn't it?!

I've been having fun so far but the things that I've done are noticeable. Some folk claim that Zebra wood is prefered to Myrtle wood when placing underneath amps, etc... It might be an option to visit the exotic wood section of my local lumber yard but I generally tend to trust audio manufacturers, well at least the smaller ones.

Smoking is a very expensive habit, and not just in financial terms. The tar can form unpleasant deposits in the grooves of the vinyl. The cost of chemotherapy is quite high, whether this is paid by the state, your insurance company or out of your own private funds.

I don't know anyone who smokes cigarillos!

I had forgotten that a friend of mine works for a tobaconist. I called him the other day and he said that he has piles of empty boxes there at the shop. No cost to me, so in a couple of days or so.

I've used eggboxes to good effect.  Zero cost, recycled cardboard construction, and keps the speaker cables away from main and signal leads.  And no, the Tesco ones don't sound different to the Waitrose ones!

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be effective to suspend the cables with string mounted to the ceiling. Audophiles back in the day, were often suspending their turntables from the ceiling.

If you suspend the cables, be sure to use cat-gut.

I saw the perfect solution when I was walking in the park yesterday.  There was a lady selling helium-filled balloons. Just hang your cables on the right number of these so they don't drop to the floor or rise to the ceiling. All resonances trapped! And this is the longest April 1st I can remember!

Well I picked up some cigar boxes and layed the cable over top of them and while it sounds remarkable, I don't know if the cigar boxes are accomplishing anything. Maybe if I bore a hole for the cable, filled the bottom with sand and closed the lid up. Also, cat gut is interesting to me (thanks Robin) as I used to put cat gut snares on one of my snare drums. And as I recall, those snares weren't cheap but they sounded better than any other alternative. I may ultimatey go ahead and spring for the Ayre (Cardas) Myrtlewood blocks anyway.
