RE: My eldest daughter blew up my hi fi

I bought some...stuff(?) today.

How fast things move on. I think that if I had popped next door for a cup of tea Marantz would have announced an update of their CD player brought out this very day.

So I bought NAIM, because it looks good, will last for ever, I can afford it and, last but not least, it is British!

I bought B & W speakers.

I would have gone for Blu-Ray as well but it's so last week.

Thanks for all the comments but I had no idea what I was doing until after some time in the shop.

That Not the Nine O'Clock News piece on hi-fi shops has to come to mind.

So if Bluray is so last week, what are they pitching right now?

Congratulations.  An excellent choice and wise long-term investment in quality.

I am surprised at your comment on Blu-ray though.  My Arcam has vastly improved my enjoyment of music in film and television, and especially the impact of opera - via my audio equipment of course.  (Both picture and sound are better for standard dvds.) Through your Naim equipment it would be stunning too.  Why not audition one in your system?

Vic.

A bit late in the day now but if the old amp hums loudly, quite probably failed elecrolytic capacitor(s) in the power supply section. Anyway good luck with your new kit.

A while ago I got an "all disc" Sony player thinking I might try SACD or Blu Ray (only in two channel I've no interest in surround sound or video discs) but as I didn't think it as good on CDs as my usual player (or a cheapo supermarket DVD player) I've still to purchase an appropriate disc...(The supermarket player is a Toshiba SD190EKB (£32 I think) with "192 kHz 24 bit audio DAC" I was astonished when I found it sounds as good as a much praised Marantz player nearly 10 times the price!)

Troyen 1, which B&W loudspeakers did you buy and which cables (interconnect and Power Amp to loudspeakers) do you use, if I may ask?

The Naim I understand is an integrated Amplifier, or not?

I have bought a Naim CD5i and Nait 5i, together with B & W CM1 Wenge and an FS 700. All leads are included.

Also, an Hifi cube to put it all in.

All at a slight discount.

It "looks" fine and it I'm sure it will "sound" better. So, enjoy! (and explore some new music discoveries).

I am always open to "new" music. New to me, that is.

Latest discovery: Siberia. Knockout. I became so involved in Giordano's score that I didn't even bother with the libretto.

I'm sure about your always "open" mind to new, innovative and creative music.

My hint was about the music you deliberately avoid or ignore, like the "weaker" (or "lighter") Chamber Music or the music before 1800, possibly Baroque and early music.

I'm certain, though, you enjoy what you choose to listen and that counts, anyway.

No, i have had enough of  note-spinning barockery et al.

And as for the chamber music you constantly urge me to turn my attention to my mind is as closed to it as yours is to the necessity of the EU!

...not "to the necessity of EU", but rather to the necessity of EU to use (or to confiscate) Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" as its "national anthem".

Good listening, all the way, and enjoy your new equipment.

What do you suggest?

The Eurovision theme, perhaps?

Maybe something original, if there might be any originality left in composition. As for the lyrics, then, there is a huge problem: Which language will prevail, which might be the theme (when you deal with a political project rather than a sort of country or state entity) etc.

So, good luck...

Reply to your query regarding the Marantz M CR 603.

I have recently purchased this unit and have been very impressed with its performance with my B&W NT 7 speakers.

The units’ compactness is deceptive and compares favourably in its performance to my -old- stack of Marantz tuner, CD player (CD 6003) and KI Signature amplifier. These occupied three times the shelf space and cost considerably more.

The Ethernet connection to the router was relatively easy to set up and the ability to access 1000s of radio stations is great fun: this has made the (AM/FM/DAB) tuner almost redundant.

The CR 603 also includes an MX port for Bluetooth and a digital optical socket, which is connected to the TV with improved audio quality. The front panel USB socket enables easy connection to memory devices. The unit also accesses Napster and Last.fm music servers.

With most of my modest CD collection ripped and downloaded with Lossless format into an iPod Classic, the CD drive has also almost become redundant. A useful refinement would be a versatile CD drive for SACD etc.

Hope this helps.
