I've got over 1,000 CDs onto my NAS now and I'm looking for a way to playback remotely.

The problem is that I want to be able to access by composer/composition/movement +/-artist (all of which I have tagged) and all the systems I've looked at seem to only use album/artist/track.

Hi quality is essential but I'll probably play back through my DAC.

Any ideas?

thanks

Mike

Helium Music Manager and Streamer then out to your  DAC should work. JRiver and other solutions exist, but I find HMM very good for a classical collection.

I use Helium for organizing and tagging classical album - several hundred in my library - using scheme Composer\Work or Album (artist)\track # - track title.  I do this on a local copy of the NAS files, then sync to the NAS...faster when doing a lot of editing, and nice to be on a copy of the NAS files if I make a mistake.

Instead of the Helium streamer, I use a Netgear ReadyNAS running Logitech Music Server and streamed to a Transporter (which provides the DAC), then to the preamp.  LMS is obsolescent, but the SlimServer community may pick up development. Until then, it works nicely.

Yes Squeezebox did look the answer but of course they are no longer on sale and I haven't found an alternative.

I'm using Musichi for ripping/tagging and it's excellent. It is also good for playback from the computer but I don't want a computer in my living room. Maybe I'll buy secondhand. Anyone got any advice on the best Logitech option?

As I said above, you can put a "virtual" Squeezebox called Squeezeplay on your PC/Mac/NAS and control it remotely using iPeng on an iPod Touch or iPad. The music is sent wirelessly to an Apple TV (if using a PC I think you have to install Airfoil).

Thanks, I hadn't latched on to the Virtual comment. Having started with that, presumably a Squeezebox would suit me fine in the other room.

I use "Teamviewer" on an iPad to control music selection from a PC.
