Very interesting concert broadcast live on Radio 3 last Friday night. First public performance (he had already recorded it) of Vaughan Williams's Fantasia for piano and orchestra played by Mark Bebbington. Pleasant work actually more "pianistic" than VW's later piano concerto. I would not have guessed the composer and was reminded more than anything else of Saint Saens's concertos. Amazing this was its first public outing.

Together with Delius's shortish concerto and they would make part of a good Proms concert (better than yet another outing for Messiaen's overlong Turangalila which seems so liked by the Proms planners).

Also first public performance of Martin Yates's (who conducted) completion of sketches for EJ Moeran's second symphony (also recently recorded). Must listen again before coming to a verdict!
