Einstein on the Beach
Despite the fact I'm not the biggest fan of either opera or minimal music, I must say I'm rather looking forward to tomorrow's performance of Glass' Einstein on the Beach. Not sure what to expect, to be honest. Review will follow!

I was in this prematurely air-conditioned supermarket and there were all these aisles, and there were these bathing caps that you could buy that had these kind of Fourth-of-July plumes on them that were red and yellow and blue, and I wasn't tempted to buy one, but I was reminded of the fact that I had been avoiding the beach.I was in this prematurely air-conditioned supermarket and there were all these aisles, and there were these bathing caps that you could buy that had these kind of Fourth-of-July plumes on them that were red and yellow and blue, and I wasn't tempted to buy one, but I was reminded of the fact that I had been avoiding the beach.I was in this prematurely air-conditioned supermarket and there were all these aisles, and there were these bathing caps that you could buy that had these kind of Fourth-of-July plumes on them that were red and yellow and blue, and I wasn't tempted to buy one, but I was reminded of the fact that I had been avoiding the beach.I was in this prematurely air-conditioned supermarket and there were all these aisles, and there were these bathing caps that you could buy that had these kind of Fourth-of-July plumes on them that were red and yellow and blue, and I wasn't tempted to buy one, but I was reminded of the fact that I had been avoiding the beach.I was in this prematurely air-conditioned supermarket and there were all these aisles, and there were these bathing caps that you could buy that had these kind of Fourth-of-July plumes on them that were red and yellow and blue, and I wasn't tempted to buy one, but I was reminded of the fact that I had been avoiding the beach.

Wow, this was quite an experience. Truly a Gesammtkunstwerk that has to be experienced live, the idea of listening to a recording of this is quite ridiculous.
I'm not the biggest fan of Glass' musical output, but here it really works. Being subjected to endlessly repeating paterns for the better part of 4,5 hours does strange things with your conciousness and perception of time.
Visually it was quite beatiful as well, and Child's choreography worked perfetcly in combination with Wilson's abstract-yet-poignant directions. I was curious if the piece would still work or if it would be dated. It still felt relevant though, probably because of its nearly purley formalistic nature (the only concrete content of the work seems to be some vague Cold War nuclear dread). Quite a remarkable work, and I'm glad to have experienced it.
