Lahti Symphony & Okko Kamu
If you want to hear and see some excellent performances of the seven Sibelius symphonies and other works from this month's Sibelius Festival in Lahti, Finland, go to Classiclive.com. You can also check out another Lahti Symphony concert from earlier in the year, as well as other performances by other groups. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra (and Kamu) are something special.

Unfortunately it appears that time has run out on viewing the Sibelius Festival except for a chamber concert. I hope many got to see and hear the seven symphonies, violin concerto, Finlandia and a couple of encores performed. My only Kamu-Helsinki recording, sad to say, is a DG LP of the Karelia and Lemminkainen Suites. Excellent too.

All is not lost - keep your eyes on the 'Features' section of the site for an in-depth look at the Lahti's Sibelius recording project, not least the change in style from Vanska to Kamu. I was lucky enough to be in Lahti for the concerts this September, and change is certainly afoot!

...oh, and BIS will soon release a box-set of Kamu 's Sibelius symphonies recently recorded with the Lahti SO. Now BIS has finished its big Sibelius project, it's focussing on...er, Sibelius. I'm not complaining though!

I agree with you Bliss. We know the virtues of the Lahti Symphony in Sibelius, and it's good to be reminded of Kamu's skill in this music (no doubt you have his 70s Helsinki recordings?). I'm enjoying the new BIS disc of music from The Tempest and Tapiola: it strikes me as absolutely excellent.
