BBC Proms
It is disappointing to see that once again The Gramophone is playing down the 'BBC' in the 'BBC Proms'in the latest issue. As far as I could see the BBC only got two mentions. Is the Gramophone properly independent of the Classic FM magazine? It ought to be. The Gramophone has a long and proud history and it should give the BBC proper recognition

Hello,
There was no policy to play down the BBC - the festival is colloquially often known as just 'the Proms', and I imagine that's what informed the magazine's branding of this feature. I would feel that devoting 20 pages to celebrating the Proms shows whole-hearted Gramophone support for the institution. For the record, all my colleagues at Gramophone would share my view that the BBC's support of the Proms and of Radio 3 is a very good thing for music - hence the special annual BBC Proms edition.

Thanks for the reply. I certainly believe that you and the contributers recognise the key role the BBC play in the UK musical life. I remain to be convinced however that those doing the sub editing consider that the BBC should receive proper credit. I look forward to seeing a proper acknowlegement next year!!

And I thought they were the Sir Henry Wood Promenade concerts!
What a joke the programme is. FIVE Mahler symphonies including two played last year and one played in both 2008 & 2009. British symphonies, if I have counted correctly, TWO IN TOTAL. Time for Roger Wright to go!

Yes indeed. Haymarket needs to be very careful here. The takeover of independent publications with long and proud histories should be considered as taken on trust. The BBC can look after itself but Gramophone's editorial integrity is at stake if it cannot give full credit for a great classical music instituton because of commercial considerations.
