Brahms Zigeunerlieder
I'm a bit confused about the Op. 103 Zigeunerlieder of Brahms. Are there eight or eleven? Some sources show "Rote Abendwolken ziehn am Firmamennt" as number eight in the series and some have it as number eleven, with three other songs between "Kommt dir manchmal in den Sinn" and the afore mentioned "Rote Abendwolken". Which way is it?

OK, we have the same version - the Norman, Barenboim recording on DG. So you're saying that Brahms - or his publisher - re-issued the same songs but this time omitted what were originally numbers 8, 9 and 10, making the original number 11 song now the new 8th. Do I have this right?
By the way, does your CD have the song texts? Mine, recording number 431 600-2, does not. But I have rounded them all up, freshened up the translations and added in all the repeats and iterations. If you don't have the texts and want them I can send them to you. Contact me at this somewhat disguished email address. I'm sure you can figure it out. Yes, it seems they took, for some marketing reasons, 8 out of the 11 (ns. 1-7 + 11) for a solo voice version w/ piano accompaniment.
I do have the texts of them erselking, in german, english and french, matter of fact, of all Brahms' leader 'cause I got the J. B.'s Complete Edition Vol. 5 (Leader) (DG - 449 633-2): let me know if you need to check something about those texts.

I don't know much about this, but It seems that those gipsy songs Op. 103 are originally eleven indeed according to the 1887-1888 edition. Due to the success, Brahms published in 1889 another version reduced to only eight among them: that's the version I have on records (Jessye Norman & Daniel Barenboim on DG).
