Calling all organ fans! I'd like your opinions on the rebuilding of the Auckland Town Hall Instrument
This instrument was installed in 1911 and was typical of instruments of the day--a "symphonic" monstrosity. I clearly remember in my youth that organists avoided it for giving recitals, particularly of Bach. I also remember being on-stage in the fifties (in a massed school choir) with it blaring away in the background and not being at all impressed at being so deafened. In the seventies it was rebuilt in an effort to make it more suitable for playing Bach and it has just been restored to its original glory (more or less) at, I believe, a cost of about $3.5 million. If you play the organ, does it sound like something you would like to practise Bach on, or give a Bach recital on? You can read about it and see photos at http://organforum.com/forums/109958/ShowThread.aspx
I challenged the chairman of aucklandorgan.org to invite Ton Koopman to play all the Bach trio sonatas on it (a challenge he is most unlikely to take up, alas). Do you think Koopman would accept? ;-)
