Chris, flush it out with some Schnittke! LOL

Funny you should say that Bazza, I was just thinking of trying the 4th quartet again. (Too late at night for the 5th symphony).!!!

By the way, Eliza, don't you find the Elvira Madigan slow movement equally twee and stomach-churning?
Chris, I found a new version of Schnittke 5 on the web - in fact a complete series of concerts featuring all 6 concerti grossi. Tremendous stuff. If you can make sense of the Russian you can download it here:

No, Bazza, I think that movement is wonderful - a real jewel. Strange, huh?

If you want an antidote to dislikes and fancy some more Dudley Moore then this brought tears to my eyes

P.S. didn't I see somewhere today (9/1/13) a moan that nobody was interested in "Chamber Music", a 6-page-thread that I contributed to myself ???

The trouble with pieces like the slow movements of the clarinet concerto and piano concerto no.21 is that they have been played to death in the wrong contexts so often that you forget how emotionally involving and heart-stoppingly beautiful they are for the time they were written. They appear on my "music for babies" CD. Say no more.
Eliza this is an interesting thread you have started. I love the Tchaikovsky symphonies but can't seem to get into the third. After repeated listenings it does not hit me between the eyes like all the others, even 1 & 2. Is it weaker or is it just me?! Views.
On Janacek, you must give him a go! His music is full of wild elements, very memorable and enjoyable. My favourite works would be his Sinfonietta, Glagolitic Mass and String Quartet no.2 "Intimate Letters". I only wish he had written more music.

I tend to believe that this is becoming a curious thread with a more odd debate (exchange of mere "dislikes"). Intriguing indeed.

Graham, have you ever tried the C minor symphony of Taneyev? I was playing it today. Blows everything Tchaik wrote into a cocked hat!

Parla, you miss the point. The thread is about pieces that quite unusually some listeners dislike despite enjoying the rest of that composer's oeuvre. It is a valid area to exchange views on. What is your problem?

Bazza, nope. That is his fourth I think. Methinks you exaggerate but I'll give it a go.

...and what is your goal? To find out why you "dislike" one particular work? To justify the fact that you dislike it? To question the rest of the output of the composer's opus?
Above all, do you see, Graham, any possible or potential direction of a valid debate (reaching a viable resolution)?

I don't know what it is about this thread but ever since your first post, Eliza, I haven't been able to get the slow movement of Mozart's clarinet concerto out of my mind.
