Hello everybody,

I'm wondering if there are any differences in content between the various available Gramophone digital editions. Anybody know?

I'm thinking, specifically, of the Zinio and Newsstand editions (on an iPad).

What brought this about was an ad in the Newsstand version of the magazine that I noticed had the prices listed in US dollars. I thought that was irregular, since I'm used to seeing British pounds. Is this because this edition is aimed at the US?

Actually, which would you say is the best way to read Gramophone on an iPad? Perhaps I'm missing some other options. Sadly, the magazine itself is not available where I live.

Thank you.

In case anybody else stumbles upon this thread wondering the same thing, it turns out that, according to Exact Editions' customer service, "The [iTunes store] version includes more content than the UK version as it is the US version."

I assume they mean an extra section dedicated to American music at the beggining of the magazine.

Also, the Zinio version seems to be the UK one.

Yes, the US edition of the magazine carries an extra section of pages dedicated to US releases, advertisers and so on, in addition to the full UK content.

I renewed my subsciption to Stereophile using Zinio on iPad - £2.99 for 12 months!

Looked at Gramophone, that £27.99 for 12 months. Is it really worth nearly 10 times as much? Someone's having a laugh!

Is it at all possible that Stereophile (which as chance would have it I also read via Zinio on an iPad) is underpriced electronically, and that your value comparison is therefore not really valid? I do know that magazine publishers are struggling to figure out what percentage of the printed price is sensible for the electronic version. For what it's worth, I think Stereophile have gone too low, Gramophone a bit too high (ie it's not yet attractive enough for me to cancel my printed subscription and switch to the electronic one, but I could be tempted if it came down a bit).

A happy New Year to you all. Just to remind you when considering this topic that words and images of course constitute a very substantial part of the cost of producing a magazine. Just because it may be delivered digitally (which in itself is not a free process) rather than on paper and through the post, doesn't mean it's been free to produce! Rather than merely being a cost issue, many of those who have subscribed digitally have done so because it better suits their lifestyle or location (in terms of how quickly a printed magazine might reach them). We're just delighted to be reaching new readers who wish to read about classical music - however they choose to buy Gramophone.

Best wishes,

Martin

I agree with Martin. Just because the magazine is not delivered by post does not mean that is should be cheap or nearly free. There are many other costs in publishing a magazine than postage, paper, and printing costs. Hopefully, Gramophone will figure out the right price and not go out of business. What would one do without Gramophone?

I agree that the Digital edition should be priced relative to the cost of production of the material in it, reviewers fees, staff costs, profit etc. but the Digital edition as it is now will never be bought by me whatever the price.  The reason?  I can keep the printed magazine but I cannot download the Digital one other than page by page.  This is silly.  I subscribe to other digital magazines and I get a downloadable pdf.

The answer seems to be a worry about copyright.  This is fallacious.  With the present system if I subscribed I could give everyone my login details and thus endanger the IP rights; I would not, but I could.  Equally if I had a pdf I could circulate it.  What is the difference?  Haymarket Press grow up, give me the product I want and save wasted paper.
