Do any sane people like classical music?
UFB means "Un F***ing Believable".
There are more things in Heaven and Earth, dear Vic, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. STUYA!

"So I hope our insane colleagues won’t mind a message from the sane: the fact that you like classical music does not make you superior, more sophisticated or more intelligent (obviously) than those who do not. So for all your dismissals of other people on the grounds you are better than them, I think you’ll find that in the hierarchy of common sense it is the bigots, charlatans and fools like you who are at the bottom of the heap."
We have only your word to take for it that you are saner than others on this forum. I would say that listening to classical musical can help to make one more intelligent, broader minded, more open to a wider range and depth of feelings, in short a better human being than some mindless oaf who sits swigging lager from a can with rap blasting in his ears.
It hasn't worked for you, though, has it you pompous, rude, intolerant child?
And while I'm about it what is that avatar all about, one of the few on here (significantly?)?
The hair dates from the sixties and what is that book you are oh-so pretentiously reading, or pretending too: the comic book Don Quixote?

I have nothing to say to a cretin like Troyen1. (He can't even spell: "too" instead of "to".)

So Ardrian, three truths in two posts.
But what is it about classical music precisely, that leads you to see your fellow human beings in terms of "heaps" to be at the top or bottom of? Or to contrast a "better human being" with a "mindless oaf" as if that were the only choice of moral worth on offer? I am reminded of Brodsky/Uber Alice/Hugh Farquar's "Those who choose the gutter are the gutter".
Whatever is at stake here for you to vent such bile?
Vic.

Well said Adrian. We listen to classical music because we are intelligent, sensitive and caring people (I know that to be true in my case and I suspect in your case too) and in return it makes us better people. However saying this enrages the 'Officer of the ordinary' and his 'Commando of the commonplace'. Get ready for the onslaught of abuse in the name of libralism. The 'Peasants of pop' smell blood.

Well I'm glad to see you have finally started apologising for your behaviour victor, let's just hope it continues. I don't think you are beyond redemption yet.

Classical music is a holding pen for misfits, as this board amply testifies.
When I look at the culture of prissy mediocrity in and around Gramophone it makes me think classical music is just not for me.

Oh come on Dmitri, there is nothing 'prissy' or 'mediocre' about a holding pen for misfits. That is practically sci-fi or Orwellian. We have daily battles with 'Luca Thread police' and they even have a profanity filter, manned 24 - 7 by Andrew Everard, it hasn't been working properly lately though, teething problems we are lead to believe. How much excitement do you want. However you are probably right and classical music is not for you. Goodbye and thank you for looking.

It was absolutely certain this thread would become sour. Very sour!
Pity!

So the problem here is that people are equating the value of classical music with the relatively small number of people that contribute frequently to these fora. Happily this is incorrect. However I completely agree that the frequent offenders, both those mentioned in the original post and those that have replied are poor ambassadors. The many threads on the boards inevitably turn into excuses for these to engage in inane self commentary rather than provide worthwhile public discourse (excepting the hardly onerous task of unacknowledged quotation from wikipedia, and probably other online sources). I admire the attempts of Gramophone to keep their website relevant. I would suggest however that the best thing they could do at this point is either shut down the forum or implement proper forum moderation. There is a reason public debates have a chair. Perhaps contributors should provide some evidence of their credentials/qualifications so it is possible to judge the likely value of their input, particularly when providing 'historical' information. At the very least remove the forum topics from the home page. Please.
Art music in the broadest sense is a wonderful artform. It is disappointing to think that anyone would be discouraged from investigating further based on the largely irrelevant discussions that frequent these pages.
So before anyone points out the irony of the above comments being posted on the forum, rest assured that this will be last post on this website. I count myself amongst the sane people that like classical music. I will continue my interest in classical music, but not here.
He reminds me of a man driving the car with the handbrake on, but stubbornly refusing to stop, even though there is a strong smell of burning rubber.

(i) People are not equating the value of classical music with the people who post on this website, no one is that stupid. Surely in this instance the offender (as Parla has pointed out) is the original post, when you put on a post attacking individual posters for their sanity you should really expect some 'insane' replies from the posters defending themselves!!!
(ii) You are judging 'worth' on your own values. Surley a reply is evidence of 'worth'.
(iii) Very few 'public debates' have a chair. Is the problem with democracy (for you) that people that you don't agree with and 'you' think' whose views are irrelevant have a vote. And if you are waiting for Simon Rattle or Sir Colin Davis to post here, I think you will be waiting a very long time.
(iv) It does seem a bit of a publicity exercise putting them there. Maybe the Gramophone think they are are reaching out to a 'street wise' crossover audience. Wicked classical music for da kidz on da street. You have to laugh at middle class marketing men sometimes.
(v) Nobody judges classical music on the contents of a chat site. However saying 'if this doesn't happen I will never post here again' is a childish but often used way of trying to get what you want. Like throwing a teddy out of your pram.

So having been made into a better human being by listening to classical music, he is better able to justify such a presumption about his fellow man is he?
