RE: Food for thought...

Another ill-fated thread, based on good intentions. So, once more, good intentions do not lead (anyone or anything) to go to paradise.

We have enough "food for thought", John, than dealing with Mr. Hough's blog. Music itself (and Classical in particular) is enough "food" not only for our "thought" but for our whole soul and brain.

The strength of internet discussion – ease and universality of access – is also its Achilles heel. In real life we hope to converse with people who can give an intelligent, considered response and steer clear of the rest. That preference isn’t available on the internet. It’s a free-for-all and ironically the folks with the least to say and most time to spare saying it tend to dominate.

Sooner or later you give up and leave them to it.

To end on a musical note: anybody interested in Hough or Rachmaninov should check out his recordings of the piano concerti with Litton. Quite the best interpretations and recordings I’ve ever heard.

Food for thought - If you don't want to run the risk of anyone disagreeing with you, don't post your (or in this case, someone else's views) on a public forum. But if you do and someone does disagree with you, try and take it like a man and not a two year old. Trowing teddies out of prams and storming of like a true diva seem to be the order of the day.

Perhaps my philosophical shrug about this strand came across as more frustrated than it should have done, Uber Alice. I've actually been as much amused as frustrated. Hough's point, if I read it rightly, is the extraordinary ability of people on internet forums to focus on inessentials in ever overly-analytical (and ever more ill-tempered) debate.

Of course this is people's prerogative: one man's irrelevance is another's passion. That's how the internet works, granted.

If I'm guilty of doing the very thing Hough decries (as I suggested, QED...) then I hope I do it this time without the appearance of bad grace.

Over the period of 828 days that I've been a forum member. Which pales in comparison with the approximately 800 posts you've fired off in about a third of that time in the 9+ guises you've assumed. And I'm still waiting for one that rises above the level of a 4th form class clown.

John,

Yes, the "not-seeing-the-forest-for-the-trees" and "over-analysing" of music happens way too often either in forums, blogs--basically throughout the net and it's important to step back and look at what is really important, true, accurate, and relevant. But more so than all of that is, I believe, in the end, how do we treat our fellow music lover? Easier said than done--I know! Not always easy to shrug off (or ignore? or laugh at?) when one has felt personally attacked, made fun of, condescended to, etc., etc.  But something to strive for, non?

All good wishes,

Petra

Petra, your comments are always well-considered and generous. That's the way I think things should be done. Thank you for it - and keep going!

Wise words indeed Petra, I will personally try to ignore and laugh at more people from now on.

Now, Alice, you surely mean 'laugh with', not 'laugh at', don't you?

U.A.,

LOL Quite witty Alice [Particularly when you edit out some of my words as you did]! Though obviously WAY off of the mark! Obviously, in the context of this thread and the article, I was referring to how I (and I think others here too) believe one should deal with/react to things like mean-spirited comments...as in "turn the other cheek", or "ignore the comment", or "laugh it off", etc., ....but I'm sure that you knew that? ;-)

Have a lovely peaceful and music-filled evening...and sorry that you missed the tennis as it was an excellent match and Murray should be extremely proud of his performance in it.

Best wishes,

Petra

While I guess the whole issue might go to its end, I wonder, John, what is the "inessentials" vis a vis the "essentials" and what might be the matter of a debate if it is not at least "analytical" enough?

Petra, what is (the significance of) "a forest without its trees"? Of course, we don't have to become too "myopic" about the "trees", but we cannot, in the same way, always admire a "forest", ignoring or overlooking the importance of its components.

Hi Parla,

Sorry, I don't mean this to sound as if I'm rudely blowing off your questions, but I think those questions have been addressed before--quite thoroughly--on other threads so I'll leave them be with my only comment being a suggestion to reread the link that John provided to Mr. Hough's blog and perhaps ponder his thoughts a bit further. As for me, I'm now going to take a walk outside and enjoy Mother Nature. I wish you a wonderful evening of music listening/family time. Take care.

Best wishes,

Petra
