Gramophone drops magazine CD in North America!
Whether a good is promotional or non-promotional is irrelevant as long as it is mentioned in the contract as part of the deal. And that was the case when Gramophone sold me that subscription.
It is all nice to develop "exciting" new things. But also in England a written contract is still a contract and has to be fulfilled. I urge other readers to look into their papers about this item and to claim what they were affirmed.
Martin, you may do your best with your new child, but Haymarket cannot ignore the contracts bound with their customers. I guess that the bigger part of the nervouseness one can feel in the anwers is related to the awareness of that.

As far as I can see there is no nervousness in the answers – think you may be reading into them what you want there to be...

The covermount CD was convenient, but the magazine is moving in the right direction with the Gramophone Player. I don't see what the fuss is all about. Maybe some of us are uncomfortable with things in the digital age.

I have been a subscriber for the past 10 years. Without fail I have listened to the cover CD each month, and usually bought 1 to 2 CDs a month on the back of it. I commute and value being able to listen to music recommendations on CD or i-pod. Whilst I am about to buy an internet radio I still wont be able to listen to recommendations in the car, or on the train.
It seems to me that this move to the future has lost functionality for some. Regretfully I have cancelled my subscription today to an otherwise excellent magazine. I am missing the music too much, and need an alternative.

The Gramophone CD made it an incredible resource for teachers. I have a CD player in all of my teaching spaces, but we are decades away from having the resources to have a classroom full of kids streaming the Player. Huge leap backwards in my opinion.
I appreciate the advantages of the Player, but I also believe reports of the death of CD are, frankly, exaggerated.

I'm among those not very happy with the move - I just sent an email to Gramophone expressing my disappointment - but if this is the future direction, I hope that you will soon move beyond the "version 1" Flash-based Player to work with more modern technologies and support mobile devices. Many of us, as you are seeing in comments here, don't want to be tethered to our computers to listen to music. I always ripped my monthly CD to my phone so that I could listen wherever I was reading my magazine! I would certainly pay for a well-designed mobile application (iOS in my case, but there are of course several viable platforms out there) that allowed me to listen to Gramophone's monthly recordings and archives on the go!
One other concern - is there any way to keep the monthly material available for longer than the eight-week period I saw mentioned elsewhere on the forum? That's an awfully short time.
Thanks for reading and responding to our concerns.

While I appreciate that some have found this is a step they have not welcomed, can I assure you that we have been open with readers about this move, informing everyone in advance both in the magazine but also in letters that we sent to every subscriber. As regards fulfilling our contract, may I borrow here from something I posted a few weeks ago elsewhere in this Forum:
The CD was a free promotional product, the aim of which was to allow readers to hear excerpts of new releases. The Player allows us to continue that, but in a much more comprehensive way. The free CD was additional to the pricing of the magazine and its removal
does not contravene any aspect of the sale of goods act, or other consumer or advertising guidelines. In fact, a number of our subscribers opted out of receiving the CD with their magazine some time ago and they pay the same price for their subscription. I hope this answers your question, but if you do still have concerns about this, then please email us at gramophone.player@haymarket.com
