Gramophone Hall of Fame
I am extremely sad to notice the absence of such an immense musician as Vladimir Ashkenazy in this so called Hall of Fame, particulary in view of the fact that his recordings legacy is so vast and rich.
Pity, really...

Having been absent from the site for a while I missed this latest exercise in audience participation but somewhat sad and shocked to find the great Neville Marriner and the ASMF unmentioned. Weren't they, possibly still are, the world's most recorded ensemble? They set standards in the 60's/70's with many classic recordings unsurpassed to this day.

Unfortunately, I find the whole "Hall of Fame" concept completely sterile and contributes little to the enjoyment of music by those already steeped in it and certainly does not encourage the engagement of those who may be newer to classical music. In fact, the HoF re-inforces the notion of classical music as being something nerdish and anachronistic.
The April edition was dominated by this theme and I fear future editions will also be affected. A Gramophone magazine usually has me going back to it througout the month - the HoF edition was consigned to the archive within days.
Keep things fresh please!

Welcome on board, AS. While I share the tenor of your position on the unfortunate notion of embarking on HOF, I'm afraid we're a minority. People love this kind of "mental" (or even emotional) exercise.
Simply, neglect it, at least for the time being. When things become rough enough, we may voice our disagreement louder and clearer.
What "they" don't understand is the damage done to the music, supposed to be served by them.

A trifle unfair on Weissenberg. While not highly regarded by the Penguin Record Guide he was infact a major talent, and all credit to Karajan for recognising this. I'm a fan of his playing but would hestitate to include him in the Hall of Fame-it's a different criteria, as i've mentioned.
