Gramophone player
Has anyone been able to download Gramophone Player from a laptop via HDMI into their HDMI equipped AV receiver ?

I can down load videos picture & sound via HDMI to my TV from my Asus Notebook, but can not obtain Player sound via HDMI to my Sony DA5400ES receiver. I do get sound from the notebook using a 3.5 mm jack to two phonos into the receiver but would like to obtain sound via the HDMI connection.

"As ever, you can hear excerpts from the Editors Choice recordings at the Gramophone website" - Oh no you can't! At the moment the player still seems to be serving last months choices. A good way of further winding up those missing their covermount CD?

No wind-up intended. The issue hits the shelves in about a week, and the people responsible were slightly caught by surprise by the earlier-than-usual subscribers mail-out date (the two dates are usually rather closer together). They've been working on it today so the excerpts will be online at some point tomorrow. Apologies for the delay - shouldn't happen again.
All the best,
James

How are the LPs transferred ? Are they given any computer processing noise reduction or de-clicking? They actually sound better than some of the modern digital recordings!

Hello Mr. Irvine, I finally got around to logging in to check out the iPlayer...am I too late to view/listen to last month's tracks? I scrambled to log in and turn it on after viewing your post. I was thinking initially that I would have 'til the end of the month at least to listen to it (if it wasn't available in such a way as to listen to previous edition's worth)....keeping my fingers crossed here! Or is there just something that I'm not clicking on to pull up the older tracks?
Way past my normal bedtime here...will have to give it a listen to tomorrow.
And thank you for your help!
Best wishes,
Petra01

To Mr. Irvine and all of the staff that have worked on the iPlayer,
I've used it several times lately and so far have been greatly enjoying it (I'm one of the lucky ones, yes, who has a relatively decent internet connection) and yes, it would be wonderful if the tracks would be downloadable too.....nevertheless...I'm really enjoying the longer tracks and being able to listen to complete movements! :D And I've listened also to some (so far) of that Chabrier/Saint-Saens piano pieces album. I enjoy listening to older albums/recordings and don't have a problem getting over the "lp sound".
Question: is anyone releasing this album on cd? Or was the transfer work just done for the iPlayer?
Also, [temporarily side-track by seeing the letter carrior walking up to my door carrying two parcels which I knew to contain cds!!! :D....Sorry...], Oh! What I was wondering if whether or not you have any sense of how long you will be keeping older excerpts on the iPlayer [I was delighted to discover that they weren't automatically deleted when the next month's magazine issue came out.]?
Warm wishes,
Petra

Dear Petra,
Thank you for your post, and I am pleased you are enjoying the Player. As for yor questions, there are no plans to issue our remastered archive recordings (they were done specially for the Player), but there are also no plans to remove them from the Player. Which brings me to the next question - excerpts of discs related to the magazine (such as Editor's Choice and Collection) remain up for the duration of the magazine's international shelf life (about eight weeks). Other things - including the Archive recordings - will remain indefinately.
Best wishes,
Martin

Dear Martin,
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I'm happy to hear that the excerpts will be around for longer than a month (though I must admit that it would be nice if there were some way to keep them around longer than that as in the past, if I say suddenly became fascinated with a certain composer or type of music, I would scour through my cds and/or issues of G, to see what I had of that composer and would listen again to them [and maybe go out and purchase that disc]. I realize though that computer/web content space is probably rather limited! :(
Happily though, due to the iPlayer, I was able to listen again to Isabelle Faust's Bartok recording last night and posted a question re that and other Bartok recordings which hopefully some folks with a lot more listening experience and familiarity with Bartok will endeavor to answer for me! Really happy that I could listen to the whole piece of music! :)
Warm wishes (from a currently rather chilly and overcast New England),
Petra
p.s. So, whose music/what recordings are you currently exploring, hmmm? :) If you have the time and feel like sharing that is...

It really depends whether your computer's sound settings are configured to play sound from your web browser over HDMI. You may have more luck running a digital audio output from the computer to the receiver, using either a digital audio cable or USB.
