Some years ago - 15 or so, I'd say - I read a superb, incredibly well researched two-volume source book dealing with Verdi's Otello. It was a collection of the entire Verdi-Boito correspondence regarding the 'chocolate' project, as they called it. It contained full production notes from the La Scala premiere and much, much more. It was published, I seem to recall, by Cambridge University Press, but I can't be absolutely certain.

Trouble is, I can't for the life of me remember either the author or the title. Much internet searching hasn't resulted in any success.

I wonder if anyone can help with identifying it, either the title or the author - or even the ISBN, he said hopefully?

Is it the two volume set "Verdi's Otello & Simon Boccanegro in letters and documents" edited and translated by Hans Busch? ISBN 10-0193132079 and 13-9780193132078. Published by Oxford.

Indeed it is!!! I had quite forgotten that it was also about Boccanegra.

I can't thank you enough for both the response and the rapidity of it. Much appreciated, Bliss

If you go to alibris.com you'll see several on sale, including two sellers in the UK. Just key in "Verdi's Otello" and that will get you to the right page. Glad to have helped.

Yes, as soon as I read your initial reply I delved into abebooks and, lo and behold, there they all were!

Thank once again.
