Janacek's 'Osud'

I read/heard somewhere that the character Lhotský was a painter, but I can't seem to find just who 

Konečný is.  In my copy of the libretto I would like to tag him with a title/description/ vocation or some kind of identification.  Does anyone know who he is other than just a male character in the opera?
