Lisa Della Casa and Galina Vishnevskaya
Lisa Della Casa gone. What a rare combination of looks with vocal and acting talent. Kudos to Gramophone for posting the Arabella clip. I much treasure her recording of that opera with Kempe.
And now Vishnevskaya gone too. Perhaps not a voice to all tastes but supreme in the right repertoire.
Sad times.

Shankar and Brubeck too.
Can't help relating my thoughts to the upcoming Boxing Day sales. It's as if the feller upstairs is clearing out old stock too. I'm trying to stay under the radar.

Vishnevskaya was superb in that 1978 "Lady McBeth of Mtensk" and her recording of "Songs and dances of Death" is ever better. An important person as well as an important artist.

Absolutely right Bazza. Her Mussorgsky convinces me that they should not necessarily the preserve of basses (well, almost, anyway!)
Never the voice beautiful, but there was intelligence and a fearlessness about her singing which is quite rare.
Della Casa was a lovely artist, with a superbly integrated instrument.

So sad to hear of the passing of Lisa della Casa. A glorious singer, especailly in Mozart and Strauss. She should have been as famous as her main rival on EMI, but unfortunately when it came to record promotion she didn't have a Legge to stand on....

Nik V, the Reds supporting conductor? Good to see you still around.

Sad times indeed! Both will be missed to those who happen to treasure their presence on stage or cherish their records. Both irreplaceable. However, we cannot do anything to avert the...inevitable.
Unfortunately, more (whoever have still left) are to follow.
