Margaret Thatcher loved Bartok.
Well that seems to come from exactly the same April Fools story. But I am now intrigued. Any further evidence?

She went regularly to the Royal Opera House. You may not have seen her at Solti's Bartok concerts (one up to you for going to those!) simply because she used to go in a private capacity.
I've no knowledge of Mrs T's musical tastes, but in my experience I wouldn't say that everyone who goes regularly to the Royal Opera House is necessarily a lover of opera, Adrian.

Perhaps an indication of the size of the pinch of salt one might need when considering the accuracy of this article can be gauged from the assertion that "In 1988, as Leader of the Opposition.........."

He liked gansta rap and driving aroundin a van with three renegades who had been wrongly accused of some crimes they did not commit.

I recollect a story about Dennis, who was accompanying mrs T to Glyndebourne (but separately). Whatever opera it was was not to his taste, so he contrived to arrive late. "Ah well, too bad I'll have a G&T and go in after the interval". However, he was horrified to be escorted to his seat as the time on the ticket wasn't the actual start time.
If this is true, this tells us that Mrs T sometimes went to the opera, but I guess when you're PM you have to go to events that you might prefer to avoid.

I can personally vouch that she sometimes went to the opera as I was rather disconcerted to find her in a stalls box at the Coliseum in the 1980s for a performance of Rigoletto in the Miler production. Disconcerted because I was directly in the line of fire had anyone taken a potshot
I wonder what she thought of Rossini in view of his portrait

I went bungee jumping in Australia and there was Mrs T in the queue. She was wearing sunglasses so she was hard to spot. She made some joke about the similarity of bungee jumping and the economy under Labour, she had quite a sense of humour. There is a lot about Margaret Thatcher we just didn't get to see.
