Martin Isepp's passing is sad news. Here is an accompanist who, to my ears, understood and highlighted true music when everybody else could find none. I have to confess that my knowledge is limited but Mr Isepp gave me one of these 'aha' moments you rarely experience. A few years ago at the start of my Handel obsession I acquired DGG's Serse. Various commentators had warned me that the baroque recitative was the reason why CD players were fitted with a 'forward' button. That day I found out that you shouldn't always believe what others tell you - Mr Isepp was, as the continuo player,  one of the true stars of an otherwise star studded recording. His playing grabbed you by the throat. His playing made the recitatives indispensable.

In his obituary, Mr Jolly doesn't refer to Mr Isepp's recorded legacy. But then I noted that Gramophone didn't bother reviewing this important DGG/Westminster issue either. (As they didn't bother with DGG's widely praised Semele - but maybe I'm being paranoid).
