I'm not one of those who closes their eyes, or follows a score or programme notes, during a concert - for me, watching the players is a big part of the occasion.  For this reason concerts on TV (e.g. the Proms) or on blu-ray & DVD have even more attraction than on CD, mp3 or radio... and of course with operas or ballet, where the visual element is an integral part of the presentation, this is even moreso.

Despite this, releases of music on DVD/Blu-ray seem not to get the attention that releases on CD and other audio formats do - for example, the two or three pages an issue that they get in Gramophone far from reflects either the quantity or the quality of the releases.

We've grown up with recorded music being in an audio format only (I've been a Gramophone subscriber since 1968) and maybe pictures seem an interloper to some - but if we didn't have this tradition behind us which would seem the more natural, music with the images of its performance or without?
