Plenty. And this is exactly what I do, Troyen.

My interest in Classical Music goes far beyond any web source, but, anyhow, I can understand you...to some extent.

(In the rather recent relevant to Shostakovich thread, you may see my contributions, deep interest and immense appreciation for the composer).

What would we all do without Google, Wikipedia etc.  Do you think all references should be cited in full, like in a scientific paper?

I was trying to list my top ten Classical Music, however as I progressed I found I could not do justice to those I left out. Does anybody else have the same predicament?

What does that mean? That you have other sources? Books?

And this justifies your spiritual preference for the first piano concerto?

If you want but my reference was to a particular poster, was it not?

Go back to the post and see for  yourself that I quote Parla and nobody else.

But it can apply to other posters too, Troyen, even if you didn't intend to imply that.

you are lucky Ian that you have been enjoying classical music for all these years. I did discover it 15 years ago when my son Fawzi graduated with music major to be a conductor. I listen to classical music daily . Here is his web site www.fawzihaimor.com

Best.

Hi Ian,

I was just thinking of you and wondering how your explorations have been going lately. Any new interests? Thoughts? I'm sure that I'm not the only poster who would love to hear your latest thoughts and reactions to what you have heard? Plus you might help to spur others of us to either check out for the first time or two revisit some pieces (or perhaps give you some suggested further recs)? ;-)

And no, maybe it's a girl thing, but I really can't do a top 10 list! But, think about it, why would you want to? If (and I think that you do) one really loves music, it's impossible to narrow things down! :-) Just relax and enjoy it all! And the voyage!

Best wishes,

Petra

"Alice",

LOL :-D The reason why I said that was that it always seems to be guys that want to do "top whatever" lists...sorry Ian, I'm not trying to be mean to you here (hence why I tried to phrase it in a polite/kind manner). And yes, "Alice" I do have my favorites. Personally, I don't have either the time nor the inclination to make lists. I'd rather either spend the time playing new music or revisiting old favorites. And yes, I've noticed that of the people that have responded, some have suggested avoiding making lists--and yes, from (I believe) some guys! Sorry, gents, I truly wasn't trying to insult any of you here: it was just an observation! For me, it's like comparing apples and oranges: every piece of music is different and I like lots of different kinds of "fruit" (and "vegetables", and "cuisines", etc., etc.). And sometimes I crave one "food" more than another and discover different "foods" at different points in my life.

That said, as I have suggested previously, either keeping a journal or perhaps making an annual list could be interesting and enlightening in ones musical journey.

If, "Alice", you like making lists--that's fine! Enjoy it! My only request: try and be nice in particular to the newbies on the site....think about how you would feel?

So, "Alice", do you have a top 10? If so, I'd love to hear what the pieces are and why. Always a good source for a topic too! :-)

Have a lovely evening--I will,

Petra

p.s. By the way, as far as narrowing things down goes, if, for example, one decides that "things played on a harpsichord drives one crazy" (which it doesn't for me), then by all means, one should feel free to say, "No, not for me!" Then again, one might be surprised at a later time to find out that one likes a particular recording heard over the radio, etc., and would then like to revisit ones conception of what one likes! Non? ;-) I know, it's hard, limited time (and more often than not) limited budget! So, do tell me, what are your favorites? I'd truly like to hear about them. Best wishes to you....P.

RE: My Interest in Classical Music.

My parents made me interestred in Classical music form the early childhood as they both are playing musical instruments (violin and trumpet). And I'm really grateful for that! As for me this is the best way to relax and to set up your mind on something really important. Nothing in a whole world helps me to concentrate better that classical music does!
