New Gramophone Digital Edition & Archive
Thanks Luca for the quick reply but the problem is the same.
(First it asks for the acccount number of my print edition - which of course I don't have but I put the digital account number in).
Then I have to login or register. If I login it does not recognise my password. If I try to register (with either the same or a new password) it says that account already exists and I should log in. Going round in circles!

I rang today to switch. Although I was dealt with pleasantly and efficiently, I'm not sure they've made the changeover process quite as smooth as it might be. As the November issueis already on its way to me in printed form, my new digital sub will start with December. Which is fair enough, except that it doesn't look as I'll have access to the archive until that happens. Hardly the end of the world, but I was anxious to make use! As I expect quite a number will be making this transition, I would have hoped they could have organised instant access to the archive.

Hi Chris,
First of all apologies you having trouble but hopefully we will be able to sort this out for you shortly.
The code to enter where it says account number is the one should have received as part of your confirmation email. Can you let me know if that is the code you entered?
Try logging into Exact Editions here and if your details continue to not be recognised ask the system to re-send you your password.
If that doesn't work email Exact Editions at support@exacteditions.com and they will help you get to the bottom of this.
Thanks,
Luca

Just solved it Luca! In order to let it work I had to not include one character from my password. Now I my password for the forum and that for the digital edition differ ever so slightly! That took some finding!

Great! Pleased you got that resolved.
So, what are you going to look at first? Might I recommend the April 1988 celebration of Karajan's 80th or the Sir Compton Mackenzie's July 1934 editorial looking back at the deaths of Delius, Elgar and Holst...

In case anyone else has any problems here are the instructions to follow once you have signed up for the digital edition.
To enjoy your digital edition and access our fully searchable archive, just follow
these simple steps:
1. Type www.exacteditions.com/print/gramophone in to your web browser's address bar.
2. Enter your account number and surname, then complete the rest of the
registration form.
3. On screen will be displayed a "Shared Access Code", make a note of
this. If you wish to read Gramophone on your PC or Mac simply click on the
"You can access your digital edition on the web here" link.
4. Download the free app in the app store and scroll through the mag. After a
few pages a payment page will appear.
5. In the Shared Access box, enter the code you were provided in Step 3.
You can now enjoy the magazine and archive on your iPad or desktop computer.
This is a one-time link-up between your subscription and the app, however if
for any reason you need your shared access code in the future, log in to your
account on www.exacteditions.com using the email address and password you set up in Step 2
above, click on 'Preferences' at the top of the homepage and you'll see the
'App section'. You will find your access code in bold to use in Step 5.
If you have any further questions about your subscription
please do not hesitate to contact us on 08448 488 823 or email us at gramophonedigital@servicehelpline.co.uk

The iPad app crashes all the time, it is useless now.
Hi Gerradp,
We are surprised to hear that as we haven't run into that problem on any of the iPads at the office. Please can you let us know exactly what you are trying to do and what happens?
Thanks,
Luca

Not for me. This is for guys with lots of spare time - and who are obsessed with old reviews! What I really need is the digest form, and I am hoping this is not the 'digital product' that the editor mentioned when I asked about the Gramophone Guide for 2013. I think its fine for some but too much information for me.

Same here. Strangely, the app only crashes when I register it using the "Restore Existing" button. As long as I don't restore it after a reinstall, the demo version does not crash. The crashes must be related to the process checking the purchase... (something, which I could not read because of the crashes).

I click on the Gramophone app, it starts, you see the cover of the last edition, and after a few seconds the app crashes and the iPad returns to the homescreen. I have removed the app and install it again, I have done a reset of the iPad, but no results. I cannot use the app.

So speaking for myself only (and I am sorry to read about those who are having technical issues):
- I have the new iPad (3rd generation, not the one announced last week)
- I have a digital subscription via iTunes
- I have had no problems accessing the older issues of Gramophone so far. Synching an issue to view off-line seems fairly slow (I have a fast broadband connection)
- This is a wonderful resource. There is a fair amount of nostalgia in lots of ways when looking over older issues. The number of new CDs announced each month, and the interviews with greats of former days, many of whom have departed.
- The level of detailed discussion and analysis of the music itself was much better compared to what we are given these days. I know times have changed, but I wish we hadn't lost that level of musicality. Trust me Gramophone, most of the readers can understand an article with more than four or five points on any given work.
- I was rather surprised to read the original review of Sawallisch's Elektra with Eva Marton from December 1990. The reviewer (A.B.) mentioned hearing performances with Carlos Kleiber but did not elaborate. Does anyone know if there are any recordings of such a performance? I would love to hear it!
He reminds me of a man driving the car with the handbrake on, but stubbornly refusing to stop, even though there is a strong smell of burning rubber.

Having got over teething troubles registering, I too can report that the magazine and the archive work well both on my laptop and on my iPhone. The iPhone app is really intended for the iPad but it is easy enough to read reviews.
I need to do more work to fully understand the search facility. Concerning two recent threads I tried Victoria Requiem (or Officium Defunctorum) with Westminster Cathedral Choir and David Hill, and Wagner Ring with Clemens Krauss Bayreuth 1953. It found both (and the Victoria with either title) but to find the reviews you do have to wade thgrough lots of places where the CDs are advertised (it finds say every advert for any seller offering the CD, as well as the company adverts*). It's hard work on the iPhone but easier on the computer. The 'advanced search' facility seems to have gone but probably you can do it with the right choices in the single search facility. I'm not sure yet.
So first impressions: good on the laptop, useful for reading on the iPhone.
Certainly noproblems running it!
Chris
* Of course you canb't have it every way. If you want to be sure of finding every reference, you have to accept that many will not be the one you're looking for!

I can add to this, that the app works well on my iPhone 4 but, alas, 100% crashes on my iPad (3rd gen.).

Hi Chris,
I thought I would try and help with this one.
When you ordered did your confirmation email contain an account number? If so you should be able to get access to the digital edition on your computer by going to the URL below. If you entern your account number, surname and complete the registration with Exact Editions you should then be able to get access on your computer.

If continue to have problems let us know.
Thanks,
Luca
