New Gramophone Digital Edition & Archive
Thank you everyone for your feedback. I am using a 3rd gen iPad and haven't run into these problems yet but I will speak to our technical team. If you email support@exacteditions.com with the problems you are running into someone will be in touch to try and help you resolve them.
Thanks,
Luca

I have removed the app a second time and installed it again. Now it works and I can download 2 issues. But when I restore my purchase (I bought it in iTunes) the app crashes again.

Hi GerradP and MartGrisel,
We've traced this to a problem caused by date conversion in certain time zones. We will shortly be submitting an update to Apple which will fix the problem globally.
In the meantime, we've temporarily pulled the particular 14 issues which trigger the problem in the time zones we've tested. This should fix the problem for the most users who have encountered the crash.
If anyone is still experiencing problems, please can you let us know your time zone and we will make the necessary adjustment.
Apologies for this disruption but hopefully things should work more smoothly now.
Many thanks,
Luca

It's typical an iOS6 problem. On my iPad 1, with iOS5 there are no problems. On my iPad 3, with iOS6, the problems arise when I restore the purchase of Gramophone in the AppStore.

I am hoping the problem on your iPad three should be fixed now but let me know if not. Sadly it might need a final app re-install.

Am I the only one who is not very happy with these new developments? I am a New York City resident who has subscribed since 1983 and had saved all my issues. With the advent of the archive in recent years, I finally began unloading all those back issues--because of the archive available to print subscribers. Now it seems, a faithful subscriber who has paid for all those years of Gramophone can no longer access the archive without a very heavy price, given the already high price of a print subscription.
I would agree with the comment below that maybe this is to nudge us to a digital subscription, but I renewed my print subscription for two more years (through your US subscription carrier) within the last two weeks.
I say foul!

If you read post No7 on the first page, you will see that you should be able to change your suibscription to the digital edition. The digital + archive seems to me very good value!

Dear wagreenlaw,
Thank you for your note and I do sympathise with your situation. Unfortunately we have had to take the tough business decision to move our free archive into our digital magazine to keep pace with the rapidly evolving publishing landscape while meeting the costs of developing and maintaining these new products.
Naturally, we do not expect print readers to pay the full price for the digital magazine but we also feel it is fair to ask for an additional fee given there are over 1,000 back issues available to read in the archive. Including an archive the size of Gramophone’s as part of a digital subscription is currently not common practice (most digital magazines charge anywhere from £2.99 to £4.99 per back issue) but we have tried to create a range of products and price points to suit as many of our readers as possible.
I do hope you will continue to read Gramophone and take advantage of the new service on offer.
Kind Regards,
Luca

Thanks Karafan
I would love to have heard that.
He reminds me of a man driving the car with the handbrake on, but stubbornly refusing to stop, even though there is a strong smell of burning rubber.

The new Digital Edition is amazing, and to think I had I kept 30 years of paper issues. One question is if the iPad app track links should work, as currently they don't take one to iTunes or the browser as the Desktop access does.

That's odd, they work for me on the iPhone. I cannot listen to the tracks though, probably because I don't live in the UK.
I'm very happy with both the digital edition of the magazine, and the Archive (which is much easier to use on the laptop than on the iPhone).
Chris
PS: I have not updated my phone to IOS6 yet. Relevant?

I can add to this, that the app works well on my iPhone 4 but, alas, 100% crashes on my iPad (3rd gen.).
