New Gramophone Digital Edition still not complete
I have just subscribed to the digital on line version of Gramophone. To my dismay, the volume covering June 1957 to May 1958 is STILL not complete with non-editorial pages. The only difference this time is that you have added scans of the front covers of each issue. Otherwise the issues covering this volume are still editorial pages only with no adverts.
I trust you will be scanning these on in due course.

Dear Luca
Sadly the missing adverts DO detract from my experience of the digital archive. I do not accept your explanation of this being a hangover from the previous archive. You are now expecting customers to fork out money to view this archive and therefore anything other than complete issues is unacceptable.
Once again, I look forward to the missing pages being restored.

I do enough work in real archives to know that I will not be rooting round in the Gramophone 'archive'. The opinionated customer here though does have a point. When I read the magazine it is more for adverts than reviews (which I basically don't respect - vide the Hatto affair). In my own archival work too the adverts in periodicals are of very great importance. Gramophone has always over-valued its reviewers and reviews, and it may be that this (perhaps necessary) self-belief has skewed this particular archival exercise. From the point of view of archival research only a complete facsimile is useful. Take a look here, if you are interested, to see how and why people who work on archival projects conduct their business. http://dl.lib.brown.edu/mjp/

And I would also add in support of my original posting and reply to Luca that the e-mail from Gramophone themselves advertising the digital archive has the following title:
"Read every page of every Gramophone issue for only £39.99!"

Yawn.
Trolls are so passé.

Who would believe that so much fuss could be made about 12 months missing advertisements in 90 years of Archive And the digital subscription with the new archive is the same price as before. How ungrateful! Some people will never be satisfied!
I suspect that the majority of forum members (and subscribers) will be far more interested in the reviews pages. In fact, I was thinking as I searched for some reviews that it's a pity that so many of the items found are references to adverts rather than reviews! But I'm not complaining. I suppose you can't please everybody!

Looking this over again the claim is only that a one year run lacks adverts. If this is so then that is just an unfortunate and probably temporary blip.

Well, based on various comments above, and Chris's emerging road test, I've taken the plunge and just subscribed on the basis that I'll be able to access it from my laptop. The decision on buying a tablet, iPad or kindle can wait a little while.
I'll try to contain my angst about missing adverts from the 50s, but I'll not be able to see how it all works until I get home this evening, so the process may not be entirely angst free judging by others' comments. Finger crossing already being indulged in.

I cannot find page 35 of the December 1998 issue (it is the final page of Hilary Finch's "Collection" article on Schumann's Liederkreis, op 24.)
Can anyone please assist? (It even shows as a blank page in the 'thumbnail' view).

Dear Stefan,
Thank you for your post and for subscribing to the digital magazine.
I am afraid to say you are quite correct and the editions you have listed are without adverts. This is a hangover from the previous online archive but we believe that while the adverts are a nice addition to the service the most important thing was to ensure that all the editorial pages were available to readers.
I hope that this will not take away from your experience of the digital archive.
Kind Regards,
Luca
