I just read that Wolfgang Sawallisch has passed away. I was lucky enough get to one of the annual Munich opera festivals where I heard him conduct a fantastic Don Giovanni. Later I managed to catch his concerts with the LPO - there was a performance of the Dvorak 7th that still rings in my ears.

Great conductor in my opinion and better than many who have larger disographies. There is a nice tribute here from Peter Alward.

RE: RIP Wolfgang Sawallisch

Just today, I listened to two of my favourite Sawallisch recordings. First, the Schumann Rhenish symphony, from his (IMO) unrivalled set of the symphonies with the Dresden Staatskapelle. Beautifully recorded too.  Then, the second act of Tannhäuser, live from Bayreuth in 1962.  The most viscerally exciting performance ever recorded.

By chance, a few days earlier (prompted by Schiller's Party) I had listened to Elijah, recorded with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Another superb performance, with Theo Adam a truly outstanding Elias. (It is possible that JKH will slightly disagree about that).

What a fine conductor he was, especially in his younger 'fiery' days!

Chris
