Russian speed
I sometimes get the impression that Russian soloists and orchestras play a lot faster than others.
Is this to do with the quality of old recordings or actually true?
If the latter, is it because they have a different temperament or because they are technically better or because of the conductors?

Friend Brodsky, you do know that these fake accents, "cryptic" forum names and weak attempts at humour entertain no one but yourself, don't you? Whyever do you bother - especially when you could be squeezing every minute of value from the license fee you are forced to pay with Radio Three and BBC4 musical output.
Oh well, it takes all sorts, I suppose.
Vic.

No, I find it annoying too. You are the only one who is single and watches Star Trek though.

Abbey road have a 240 volt electricity supply however Melodiya have a 220 volt supply. This makes a difference in the speed the turntable revolves at. So a recording made in Russia at 220 volts will seem faster when played on 240 volt equipment. I think the equation is I R V over T divided by the square root of pi. Most later CDs have this factor built in. Decca found out in the late 1980's that if they transfered the russian recordings played backwards the result was very strange indeed.
