Good to see BBC television news this morning reporting on the rumour that the Beckhams may have been invited to Royal Wedding in April. But how unfortunate that said news gathering organisation couldn't find space to report the sad fact that George Shearing died last week. Yes, you're right - I though that was shoddy too.

Yes, well this is the BBC reporting on what really matters!

Even sadder is the undoubted truth that if a real genius such as Anthony Braxton died in the morning (and I wish him another hundred years of life) he wouldn't even get the mention that George Shearing got.

I read the subject of your thread with horror, thinking it was going to be a genuine footballing question - Shearing vs Beckham? Then I realised I was thinking of Alan Shearer. Football's the one where they can't pick it up right?

Anyway.... the Beckham's are going to the Royal Wedding! What will they wear, what will they wear?

Big vacant smiles I should imagine, just like the rest of the days.

However hard BBC News honchos deny their news values have been diverted towards infantile celebrity blather, things like failing to cover Shearing's death rather catches them out. I suspect had George died at 81, ten years ago, there'd have been no question of a mention; he was a figure of real cultural significance after all.

Are you certain Anthony Braxton has died? Google isn't coming up with anything to that effect - let's hope he's alive and practising his latest algebra tunes.

There are a lot more important things happening in the world than who's going to that wedding, yes. But there are a million things more tragic every day than George Shearing's death. Why complain about the BBC, when you'd only replace one trivial thing on an international scale with another?
