Sibelius Pelleas et Melisande
This is just a cheat's way of getting in a short tribute to the late great Sir Patrick Moore who died yesterday. As well as astronomy he was also a musician, I'm sure there was a CD review of his music in Gramophone some time ago, and his choice of music for The Sky at Night certainly got me investigating Sibelius's incidental music. There was also some thoughtful words from Miss Sara Mohr Pietsch on Radio3 this morning.
RIP Patrick at the Castle Gate.

Just been watching some old SkyatNights on BBC4 and some of the older versions (1980s?) seem to have a very peculiar arrangement of "At the Castle Gate". The orchestration seems to be considerably enhanced and finishes with a massive cymbal crash. Sounds very impressive, but I'm not sure if Sibelius would approve!

I bought Barbarolli's recording (Halle orch. of course) of the 1st Symphony with P&M exerpts as a filler when I was studying Music at uni 40 years ago. Love the record - its now available as part of a Sibelius boxset. Whether its just that they're the 1st versions I heard & got used to I don't know, but other recordings I've listened to seem to lack something to my ears. His performance of The Death Of Melisande is sublime.

The Barbirolli/Halle recordings of Sibelius were pretty good. Very good LP sleeve notes also.

Hi DarkSkyMan,
We did indeed review a disc of Sir Patrick Moore's compositions, 'Moore Music,' recorded by the RSNO. We've put the review on our Facebook page for all to view - please click here to see it.
