Software to catalogue classical music collection
You're welcome.
BTW, when using the advanced filter, make sure you have highlighted any cell in the table proper, before going to data/filter/advanced filter; otherwise Excel does not fill in the range field.

JRosenfeld,
Thanks for your further suggestions....sorry, I haven't been on here lately either! Hope that you get this message. Something tells me, that this will be a wintertime project for me! :)

I have tried many organizers and finally ended with CATraxx. Simply perfect compared to Music Collector. Very powerfull search machine, friendly interface , you won't regrett.
I must agree. Catraxx is as good as it gets. It is a very powerful music database and offers tons of features. Frankly I find that it offers too much in the way of features and functionality. The good news is that you can design the database to hold as much or as little as you need. It is not designed specifically for classical music so you have to make a few adjustments (if you don't mind tinkering with it a little) to enter and search by Opus no. or Kochel listing. The software is continually updated and the latest release includes the ability to catalogue box sets. All the others I have tried really pale next to Catraxx.

JRosenfeld,
thank you so much for your description of how you've organised your excel database for your collection. I'm approaching desperation as many of my discs have multiple composers/works and cover more than one period and the spine often says things like !Bach etc"... which really doesn't help. They're currently filed in the drawer under alphabetical order of first-named composer on the disc but this means that I've really no idea what works I've got and what works I haven't...
I've been discussing cataloguing with my (techie) husband and said I thought an Excel database would do the job nicely (I use Excel for other databases) but he thought a dedicated package would be better. Having read this thread and simlar on other forums I've decided to go the Excel route and your description makes the initial set-up so much easier for me - less thinking and more typing! :)
I'm currently off work convalescing so will make a start today! :) I'll let you know how I get on...

PS I haven't got the technical expertise to "tinker" with other packages...

If you can work with excel you can work with catraxx. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

Music Collectors is a bit slow but seems to run the best mapping , and detect music files accordingly. Have tried a few others , but none has the accuracy of this program, even got a bugged exe file extension with one of these "free" programs and messed up my entire system.

I just stumbled on this web site: www.3beez.com. It describes a complete
system with music management software that appears to solve my problem with
classical music. The web site says that they are still working on a marketing
plan, but I was wondering whether anyone has seen a demonstration or a review of the
system. It looks powerful, but it's hard to tell from static images.

It's the easiest of things to use either Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice Calc to create a cataloguing database in a few minutes that exactly meets your needs. And those programs come free with most computers. (If you use Calc, you know that you'll be able to upgrade for free for ever, so you'll never have to start again if the software becomes corrupted and the manufacturer goes bankrupt, say.)

I've seen some people who use "Classicat v2.1" who have lost their copy and needed one to restore their database. I happen to still have a copy of the original ZIP file if anyone needs it for this purpose. Email me - steve@demena.com

I have been using Orange CD (OCD) for a very long time. I recently looked at CATraxx and didn't find that it was an improvement. So far ALL my upgrades to OCD (major and minor) have been free, but that may not apply to new registrations. OCD uses FreeDB as its lookup database; FreeDB is not error free, but I have been able to easily correct most glitches. OCD does read tracks purchased from the iTunes store. I like it because it is possible to create one's own display templates (like any user modifiable program, some expertise is required). OCD can play tracks through iTunes, but cannot create playlists. OCD can also upload seamlessly to the users account at racksandtags.com, as well as create html export files. Probably because I am so used to it, I found the OCD display simpler and less fussy than that in CATRaxx.

Readers may be interested in a new
cataloguing application for classical music that has just been launched.
It
is a SourceForge project emanating from Spain. As collaborative
software, it is free to use and the author is looking for improvement
suggestions and/or technical input.
You can see and download it at www.classicalmusiccollector.com.
I
haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but it is the first new
purpose-built app for collecting classical music that I have seen for
some years. May be worth following and supporting.

Thanks JR. I've been contemplating doing this for some time and I think you've given me the answer I need!
