The Vienna Philharmonic & their trumpeter
I'll tell you what to do about this, guillaume: just get off VPO's back. Contrary to what you say, the critics do know, so much so that every so often they bash the VPO for its sexism (Norman Lebrecht is a case in point). Well, if they want to do that, they should criticize the BPO on the same grounds, for the sake of consistency. Either that, or drop the matter altogether and concentrate on things musical. Like the recordings you mention, for example.

One of the most interesting in Osborne's Karajan bio is how the word "Barenboim" almost saved Karajan's life.
What's wrong with VPO being all white if asian orchestras are all asian.
eyer - Wagner might not agree with Alejandro.

The magic word is "Barenboim"? Intriguing. I do want to read Osborne's book but it's out of print and just too expensive - hopefully there'll be a cheaper reissue at some point.
I don't have a problem with the VPO being a white boys club if that's just how things shake out (how many non-white females would want to join such a thing?) - the issue is really the stench hanging round from the War.
(If Wagner has a problem, he knows where to reach me!)

Asian orchestras are not "all Asians". They might be predominantly Asian, but they do not exclude or discriminate non-Asians. Those white guys or ladies who may reach the major cities in this part of the globe can make it...rather easily (of course, among the qualifications, to speak the local language is a sort of prerequisite).

Sorry Carlos, I thought it was you who was on the VPO's back - I was defending them.

Nonsense, I'm defending them and you are both on their backs. Both of you, get off their backs now.

You're a bad reader, Sidney. I've been defending the VPO all along in this regard, and so has guillaume. My point has always been that it's untenable to criticize the VPO for sexism while sparing other orchestras which also feature a vast majority of male musicians, particularly the BPO. It's just bloody hypocritical. I hope this is clear now, even to you.

Thanks and no sweat, guillaume. We're on the same side here.

Agree that racial / gender diversity may be a noble cause. But who can blame the composers? Who will change the fact that beijing is 99% asian and vienna is 99% white?
If no one is blaming the asian orchestras for predominantly asian, then the racial content of the VPO is moot in and of itself.
Discrimination may be another issue but they seem to be happy with Lang Lang .

They seem to be happy with yin and yang as well.

And if things can be more perplexed, visit some major Asian countries and check their orchestras (only in South Korea only, there are Symphony Orchestras in almost any city) and you will be astonished by the number of women in them. At least in two quite interesting and significant orchestras of this country, the ratio of female members versus the male ones is between 85-95%! However, who knows or care about these orchestras despite the fact that they perform brilliantly? And should the male musicians complain about "discrimination"?
However, the ratio of the female conductors stays at about 5% only (they follow the international standards, I guess).
