Now would you sell your soul to someone wearing shiny green short shorts?

I've had this disc for years.
I went through a John Adams phase.
The recorded performance to get, apparently, is the Edo De Waart. A much underrated conductor, these days, and very good in this kind of music.
As for 'Mefistofele,' clearly Hell is wearing green underwear.

Contributors to this thread might be interested to know that the Times newspaper has run a two-page feature today on our worst record covers article. Do keep the suggestions coming - at this rate we might run a sequel! And it's a jolly entertaining thread in itself...
All the best and thanks to everyone for your ideas,
James

I don't want to give the game away but readers of these forums can probably guess what the paper gave as first choice and which label scored highest!

My vote is for the DECCA Nilsson Salome, followed closely by the contemporary DECCA Boito Mefistofele with Tebaldi and del Monaco.

A few new covers (and some repeated I see) which are some of the best of the worst:

so the gist of this Gramophone article is "Collectors' item" covers you love to hate?
Some great covers unearthed so far, but hate them? Not a bit of it. I think most of them are brilliant.
Surely the compiler of the Westminster Gold covers who said at the end of his listing "apparently there is no permanent place in the field of marketing classical music for humor, originality, and sparkle" got it spot on.

I looked at the preview for the May issue and saw that of the 9 covers featured on the first 2 pages, 6 of them were featured on my blog. I hope I get a namecheck!

Laszlo Sonorgyi, Vienna State Opera Orchestra: Antonin Dvorak Overtutres Opus 91, 92, 93/Slavonic Rhapsody no. 2
A cover only a foot fetishist could love.
Georg Solti: Richard Strauss Salome with Birgit Nilsson
There is a Living Stereo record, I believe of a Stravinsky pieice, that has a hideous red-haired clown on the cover. Academy Records in Broojklyn had it up on the wall for the longest time--I'm not sure if it's still there. They had a bunch of bad classical covers on the wall.
There was also a violininst who did a topless cover. I'm not talking about the Lara St. John Bach album. This one wa sin full color with a yellow background and depicted a woman actually playing the violin. It looked much tackier than St. John's album. I saw this at Sinfonia Music in Indianapolis several times, but somebody bought it before I took note of what it was, and I've never seen it again. I tried keywods on Google images, but dind't find what I'm thinking of. She was facing left.
I have a list of 40 bad album covers on Amazon, of which eleven are classical:

LMAO
On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do these guys look like the original composers?

That is hilarious. My favourite is Tchaikovsky - what a bruiser! Thanks a lot for this post.

Thanks FW. Very funny!
I'd say Beethoven and Schubert are shockers as lookey-likeys!

Love the hairpieces and beards. All that's missing from the Brahms shot is the elastic round the ears.

Since I am the one who put together westminstergold.com, you may assume that I love most of those covers. For bad covers, I would nominate almost any WG cover starting with catalog number 8319, simply because they belong to a much more boring universe than the ones that came before.
If I may venture outside the realm of classical music, I just discovered this gem, which makes me want to start another site just for truly bad covers:
