Universal Music pledge renewed focus on classical
What bothers me, is that almost no-one commented on the rest of the London meeting. And there is some good reason for that. What does Universal really mean with "classical"? I raise this question as the focus of that meeting was the presentation of David Garrett and his Rock Symphonies...
Is that what the new focus will be?

I think the three *amazing* new Boulez releases have already got the season off to a fantastic start.
Go to the store, hand over the money, be delighted.
In any case I think that, contrary to some commentary on the 'majors', Universal have kept up with some great releases over what are supposed to be difficult years, all tied in to some of the best artists who are working hardest to promote their work around the world - many new operas, which we were led to believe we would never get, great recital and concerto recordings, and some wonderful orchestral stuff (maybe not too many new Brahms cycles and the like, but some great modern ones are still in the catalogue).

@james
Hope was up when I heard Julia Fischer's new Paganini CD. It seemed, there really was an effort made to make a sensible new product, one that had added value. If you count the amount of "Editor choices" Universal products earned the last 24 Gramophone issues, it seemed that quantity took over quality. But, let's see! Maybe the fact "we" still faithfully buy CD's and do not download ourselves to death (the death of a label, that is) helped Universal in this strategy...

Hi otterhouse - I wasn't at the meeting, but I can tell you that Decca and DG are making a lot of impressive new signings and are absolutely genuine about their renewed commitment to 'core' classical.
All the best,
James
