I remember several podcast episodes of the Nacocast interviewing Pinchas Zukerman, he seems to have a firm stance on when to use vibrato. You guys might want to give these episodes a listen to see how (at least) one violinist would like it.

I think you like to persist on a matter that lies at the performer' s discretion and finishes practically there. All the rest is of course nice to discuss, repeat the same old stories about conductors, composers and other musicians. The point is that vibrato is a fact of music and we can neither get rid of it, condemn or even praise it.
Besides, it has not much to do with the purity of tone, since the better the technic of the performer the less noticable the use of vibrato may be. The other day, a conductor in Asia told me the whole orchestra (all the strings sections, woodwinds and brass) perfrom using vibrato at least in slower passages and where applicable (in fast passages, it doesn't make sense and it's practicably not possible to use it for any purpose).
