Petra - why not try the Maggini performances on Naxos? They're cheap, won all kinds of awards, and the one I tried (#3) sounds very fine to me.

Hi Petra, I don´t remember who the musicians were but my copy of the two Kodaly works is on Apex, you know that wonderfully cheap label that usually has very good musicians in very good performances. As for LPs the only things I brought with me were a portable turntable 40 lps and a handful of CDs. Yes libraries are marvellous, this morning I borrowed Dallapiccola´s opera Ulisse which I had never before. I would also recommend the Britten third by the Maggini´s on Naxos.

RE: way into Bartók's quartets?

Tagalie and dubrob,

Thank you for your Britten quartets suggestions. Yes, from my bit of poking around on Amazon and elsewhere, I see that they have received good reviews indeed!  Think that I'll start with the one containing nos. 1 and 2 (as my friend had so strongly enthused over the second quartet).

Best wishes,

Petra
