2011 New Year Wishes
For a long time I hoped that Abbado would go back to Verdi - to hear him tackle any of the operas would be a tremendous privilege. Given how careful he has become with his engagements I doubt very much we will hear many operas again from him, although I hope that his recent 'Fidelio' will make it to CD or DVD.
I have never understood why record companies have not engaged Sir Mark Elder to lead Verdi operas - he has proved time and time again that he is one of the finest operatic conductors at work today. I am very happy to see that he will be conducting 'Die Walkyrie' in Manchester this year and I hope a recording will follow.

Not too bothered about artists, but what about:
A complete Byrd English music series to match Andrew Carwood's Latin one;
The Rosenberg symphony cycle that was planned by BIS about 10 years ago and never appeared;
An uncut Midsummer Marriage?

My dream just came true, the wonderfull production of Rossini's Armida with a superb Fleming leading the cast on dvd .(feb 7 -11)
Makes my year already.
Thanks for the tip-off. I just ordered it.
The Met has recently issued, or is about to do so, a whole bunch of interesting dvds and at the reasonable prices they're asking you can afford to gamble. I'm wondering how their production of Doctor Atomic compares with the Netherlands dvd.
One recent production they haven't issued, which I'd like to see soon, is the Shostakovich "The Nose".

For one awful moment I read it as Barenboim was going to record the Sibelius Symphonies and thought: Oh, the horror, the horror, it is a brazen attempt to knock the Ashkenazy off its perch as the worse cycle on disc!
It would be nice to have Medee instead of Medea.
Re-issues of operas come with full translated libretto either as a booklet, download or CD-rom.

I always find Barenboim hard to grasp - his writings (particularly in conjunction with the late Eduard Said) are thought provoking but what I hear on CD is not so interesting (I like the BPO Bruckner 5 and the Mendelssohn Songs without Words he recorded many years ago, so all is not lost!) but a Sibelius cycle from him would be both out of character and highly likely to be very disappointing.
I didn't even bother with opera requests as new recordings are just so rare. But if the sky is the limit then I would hope for these:
Tchaikovsky - Eugen Onegin (Gergiev/Kirov or Jurwoski/LPO)
Any Bellini or Donizetti from Elder (on Opera Rara?)
Turnage - The Silver Tassie (anybody - maybe on NMC?)
Schrecker - Die Ferne Klang (a new recording with a top radio orchestra and cast; the Naxos recording is ok but this is music that needs be played - anybody want to get Noseda on the case?)

For a change, I would love to see as less as possible from the major labels, since the last years, they have to offer nothing but mediocre performances.
However, I would urge Praga Digitals, MDG, Alia Vox, Audite, Channel classics, Challenge, Exton and some more independent labels to continue their endeavours in their special fields of interest.

I think that another Donizetti from Elder and Opera Rara is imminent.
I thought that there was a Gheorghiu/Adriana on DVD. Not all that good as she is clearly close to the end of her career.
A Sicilian Vespers in French would be nice, say, from Elder or Pappano. Come to think of it a I Vespri Siciliani in Italian would not come amiss.

Don't like the Muti La Scala dvd?
DVDs of:
Martinu's Julietta and/or The Greek Passion
Prokofiev's Fiery Angel
Respighi's La Fiamma
Magnard's Guercoeur
Any Zemlinsky (so far we only have Der Zwerg)
Shostakovich The Nose (what happened to the Met performance?)

As we enter 2013 it won't do that much harm to share our wishes for new recordings.
I, for one, am exceedingly keen to hear Gardiner and the ORR in the Mendelssohn symphonies. I've longed for them to do a CD of the Scottish & Italian symphonies and the Hebrides overture all in one place.
I'm also hoping that there might be a new version of Antar in its real 1897 version. The only good recording of that edition is the Hyperion disc with Svetlanov and the Philharmonia. I've liked that better than Svetlanov's Melodiya and RCA versions of the same piece, and better even than the BIS recording with Bakels in Malaysia.
If I'm a bit outlandish I've wondered why there can't be a project of Russian Orientalism, featuring Steppes of Central Asia, Tamara and Islamey (Lyapunov orchestration), the Persian Slaves from Khovanshchina and the Polovtsian Dances (orchestral only). These pieces have hardly ever been grouped together on a recording.

I agree very much with you on a Pappano Vespri. But I think you forget the Levine recording which in my opinion is wonderful. And it is really sad that Vespri has so few recordings.
The fly in the ointment on Levine's recording is Martina Arroyo. Much as I enjoy her performances of other roles on disc. Her contribution to this set is rather thick and heavy and lacks flexibility. Her rendition of the famous Bolero is the worst I have ever heard.
