A warm welcome to the re-issue of Mozart operas by Sir John Eliot Gardiner on Archiv for under £30. At 18 cd's this is phenomenal value for money - especially since these have largely only been available at full price before. In terms of quality, for me only the Zauberflote falls short (and is best complemented by the Abbado, Mackerras or Jacobs). For me the Cosi, Figaro and Giovanni are close to, if not, the top recommendations and the Idomeneo and Clemenzo are challenged only by Jacobs.
Is it too much to ask that Teldec release a box of the MacKerras Mozart operas with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (the Cosi and Figaro are brilliant) and that EMI finally get around to re-issuing a Klemperer box - with underrated accounts of Giovanni and Cosi, a well known Zauberflote and a Figaro that deserves a re-assessment?
