Chopin - Stephen Hough
Sun, Apr 25 2010, 12:44PM
Hi All
I'm enjoying Stephen Hough's new disc of late Chopin at the moment. I wondered how you would charactherise his playing in this repetoir? There is something very direct about it I find, almost muscular at times, while still having poetry and a lightness of touch. Though written down that sounds like a contradiction in terms :)
But I wondered what your thoughts were, and how you would compare Hough to other masters of this repetoir?
Cheers

Serviceable, but for Chopin have you heard Demidenko on the same label (or Helios, now that he's gone)? More risk-taking, as are Argerich, Pogorelich, Michelangeli, Ts'ong, others.

I am not familiar with Hough's playing, but am interested in finding out how he would compare with Pires rendition of the Noctunes or Perahia's rendition of the Etudes, especially since the Etudes call for "muscular playing."
Are you familiar with Garrick Ohlson's complete edition also issued on Hyperion?
